Omschrijving

Description

Two GUARD HOUSES on the east side of the parade ground, on either side of an access drive closed off by an ACCESS GATE, set back slightly in the middle of fencing erected along the Leusderweg, which is approximately 100 metres long in total. The guard houses have a square floor plan, one storey and are provided with an overhanging segmental arched roof. They have a robust, sturdy character through the eclectic application of neo-Renaissance and neo-Baroque details.

The high cast-iron fencing has vertical spikes with spear points and is furthermore provided with scrollwork and coats of arms of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and of the city of Amersfoort, which alternate with one another.

The guard houses, also called painter's houses, are symmetrical and identical to one another.

The natural stone front (east side) of the guard house is oriented towards the Leusderweg. In the facade is a round-arched opening, behind which a brick niche is built, which provides shelter for the guard. The opening is flanked by two profiled pillars standing on a basement with rustication. The pillars are interrupted by broad band courses. On the pillars rests the round arch with a facetted keystone. Above this is a main cornice with block ornamentation and a far-overhanging curved pediment.

The rear side had a less representative function and consists of a brick wall on a natural stone basement. The surface is interrupted by two continuous natural stone band courses and is bounded from above by the natural stone main cornice with the curved pediment.

The ACCESS GATE originally separated the 450-metre-long parade ground from the Leusderweg. During renovation, a considerable part was removed on both the east and west sides. The middle section was restored. In the middle of the southern boundary of the ground between the two guard houses there is inward-turning fencing and on the outside of it two narrow gate sections. The fencing consists per section of twelve large spikes, with in the lower half a further eleven smaller and thinner spikes between them. The spikes are horizontally bound at the bottom, slightly below the middle and at the top. The twelve spikes protrude above this and are crowned with spear points. Between the spikes elegant scrollwork is arranged. A diagonal bar provides the rigidity.

The narrower gate sections consist of five larger spikes with four smaller spikes between them. The hinge points are fixed to the guard houses. The fencing has the same layout as the rest of the fencing.

The fixed parts of the fencing are subdivided by supports, which are supported on the rear and provided with a large elegant spear point. In front of these supports a scroll is arranged at the bottom. Furthermore, coats of arms are placed on the support at the level of the upper horizontal, alternating white with a red cross, the city coat of arms of Amersfoort, and the lion against a blue background, which represents the coat of arms of the Netherlands. Between the supports there are ten larger spikes and nine smaller ones. To the left of the guard houses twelve sections still stand and to the right seventeen sections still stand. The fencing is closed off at both ends by built masonry rectangular pillars. These pillars are crowned by a natural stone element which has a curved pediment on all four sides. The design of these pillars is based on the design of the guard houses.

Valuation

The entrance with the fencing of the former infantry barracks is of general importance on account of its architectural historical value as an intact and well-detailed example of guard buildings of a barracks complex, executed in a neo-Baroque architectural style and adjoining well-detailed fencing. The guard buildings with the fencing are moreover of great ensemble value in relation to other components of the former barracks complex.
