Omschrijving

Description

The floor plan of the residential section of the MOTHER HOUSE is U-shaped, with an internal courtyard that is entirely surrounded by a cloister walk. On the north side of this walk is situated the chapel, which is oriented north-south. The U-shape of the residential section can be subdivided into a main building with a hipped roof with a flattened apex, which runs parallel to the public road, and two wings with flat roofs. The main building is situated at some distance from the public road and is accessible by means of two access roads on the left and right. The site is bounded by a yellow brick wall with pilasters between which is wrought-iron fencing.

The architectural style can be characterized as a personal and sober interpretation of styles such as rationalism, Neo-Renaissance and chalet style for the residential building and Neo-Gothic for the chapel. The symmetrical front facade (south side) of the main building is elongated, has two storeys and can be subdivided into a projecting central section, six bays wide, and two flanking wings, each three bays wide, although the windows are spaced further apart. Each of the three sections has a hipped roof with a flattened apex, which is interrupted only in the central projection by a gable with a flush roof and substantial roof overhang, which together with the wooden panelling in the gable gives the building a rural character. A cross is placed on the gable. On the roof, which is covered with orange interlocking tiles, are dormer windows with flat roofs.

The gable in the central projection is two bays wide. The windows in the first storey are spanned by a natural stone lintel with a segmental arch above. The latter are absent in the second storey, except above the windows below the gable. In the gable of the central projection is a strip window consisting of three windows. Strong similarity with number 53 is shown by the internal entrance, which is positioned precisely in the middle under a large semicircular natural stone arch. Above the natural stone arch is a field framed in natural stone bearing the name Klooster Sint Joseph. The double glazed doors with fanlights and side windows are reached by means of three natural stone steps.

The rear facade is determined by the chancel of the chapel, which consists of three sides, with buttresses in between. In the brick walls are pointed arch windows. Above the chancel the saddle roof of the nave projects, which is crowned by an open roof turret with needle spire with slates. The gutter height of the saddle roof is equal to the gutter height of the main building. The chancel is flanked by low rectangular rooms with flat roofs, which previously served as sacristy and storage. Further back is situated the composite rear side of the carré of the residential section. The walls are simply detailed and in particular in the middle provided with rectangular two-light windows with eight-light fanlights. Fully recessed is the composite hipped roof of the main building visible.

The left side facade shows from right to left the two storeys with hipped roof of the main building, next to it the two storeys with flat roof of the west wing and far left the entrance to the extension from 1918. This extension obscures the view of the western side wall of the chapel, which is positioned far left and further back. In the wall of the nave are three pointed arch windows, in the side wall of the chancel two pointed arch windows. The walls of the residential block are simply detailed and with rectangular two-light windows with eight-light fanlights in the second storey and on the ground floor double glazed doors.

Although the right side facade differs in details and window division from the left side facade it can be stated that the right side facade is in broad outline mirrored identically to the left side facade.

In the interior, floors, walls and ceilings are mostly intact. However, the ceilings have been lowered. Particular rooms are the meeting room in the north-west wing, the entrance, and the simple chapel with wooden ceiling, with modified seating plan, adapted to contemporary requirements. An extensive corridor system runs beneath the entire cloister.

Valuation

The mother house Sint Joseph, Barchman Wuytierslaan 55 is of general interest because of its architectural-historical value as an unblemished and rare example of an eclectic architectural style, as well as of the building type mother house. The building is furthermore of cultural-historical value as an example of a retreat house oriented towards a philosophy of life. The building is of ensemble value in relation to the former retreat house, Barchman Wuytierslaan 53, also designed by H. Kroes. Both buildings occupy an important place in the oeuvre of H. Kroes.
