Omschrijving

Description
Description
The elongated residential block C, belonging to the MIDDLE-CLASS HOUSING complex by architect A.H. van Wamelen, is situated on the west side of the Schaepmanlaan and is oriented with its front facade facing east. Shallow gardens separate it from the public road. A vaulted passage separates seven northern dwellings from four southern dwellings. These four dwellings, as well as the northern corner dwelling, are situated slightly further east.
The ground plan is predominantly rectangular, with the exception of some offsets, the rounded projections on the corner of the northern end dwellings, and the rectangular kitchen extensions placed at the rear. The residential block is accompanied by free-standing wooden sheds with thatched roofs. The residential block follows the sloping terrain: each dwelling steps slightly in height in relation to the dwellings to its left and right. This is most noticeable at the roof edge, which makes a bend each time. The entrances of the dwellings with thatched roofs are kept free of rainwater by a narrow gutter.
The dwellings have primarily two storeys. The terraced dwellings are covered with a tiled gabled roof running parallel to the road. On the dwellings at the ends, the tiled roof transitions into a thatched roof, which has an expressive, steeply rising form and partly extends down to the first storey. Brick chimneys and curved roof dormers puncture the roofs.
Not only in the expressive forms of the roof sections but also in the playful and imaginative brickwork, the refined glazing bars in the windows, which are equipped with shutters, and the horizontal and vertical boarding of the facades, the influences of the Amsterdam School, the English-derived Cottage style, and the Gooise countryside house style come to the fore.
The front facade (east side) consists from left to right of a corner dwelling with a recessed kitchen extension (type AI), three dwellings (type B and BI), separated by a passage from a recessed block of seven dwellings (type B and BI), with at the right end the projecting corner dwelling (type A) with an outstanding, rounded corner solution. Above this rounded bay window with strip window, the roof continues down to the first storey. Furthermore, the facade has two storeys throughout. The facade is further subdivided by the horizontal boarding of the middle dwellings in the recessed section. This creates a highly varied appearance: there are dwellings with brick facades and thatched roofs, dwellings with brick facades and tiled roofs, and dwellings with boarded facades and tiled roofs. All B-type dwellings have a front door (placed two by two, with a semi-circular canopy) and two windows with shutters on the ground floor. On the second storey, each dwelling has a strip window.
The rear facade (west side) consists mainly of two storeys, which, as on the front, step slightly in height relative to each other per dwelling. The rear facade also follows the variations of the blocks: the corner dwelling on the left, incidentally the only dwelling provided with one storey and a steeply rising roof, is recessed relative to the six middle dwellings. The four dwellings to the south of the vaulted passage are likewise recessed. A kitchen extension, which does not stand entirely at right angles to the main mass, forms the termination of the facade. Chimneys puncture the roof gutter in several places. Rhythm in the facade is further achieved through the repetition of window patterns. Low walls connect small sheds, with tiled or thatched roofs, to the main mass.
The main mass of the left side facade (south side) consists of two storeys with a thatched hipped roof. A chimney is located on the ridge. A kitchen extension, equipped with a semi-circular door, cross window and thatched hipped roof, projects by means of a gentle angle relative to this main mass. On the left, a low wall projects, thereby marking the entrance area. A wide canopy provides shelter. To the right of the profiled entrance is a window with a shutter. Entirely on the left, a chamfered corner solution has been designed. In the second storey, a four-part strip window is placed in the middle.
The right side facade (north side) consists of one storey with a far overhanging, steeply rising thatched roof section, with a chimney at the apex. At the level of the second storey, there is a wide roof dormer. The roof section transitions on the right side into the low roof over the kitchen extension, which is punctured by a built-up brick chimney. Under the overhang is the entrance, with a semi-circular profiled door. The overhang is also supported by an asymmetrical brick column, which is placed at right angles relative to a brick wall. This low wall ends with a gentle arch on the projecting extension of the bay window, entirely on the left. Other windows are located to the left of the entrance, just beside the entrance on the right side, and to the right of the access to the kitchen.
In the interior of the dwellings, the spatial division is particularly noteworthy: the passage is positioned diagonally relative to the various spaces on both storeys.
