Omschrijving
Omschrijving

Description
Description
The main form of the former RETREAT HOUSE ("St Alphonsus") is T-shaped and can be subdivided into an elongated residential section, parallel to the public road, with a chapel in the middle behind it, which forms the stem of the T. The complex includes lower spaces - with flat roof - which are arranged both to the left and right behind the main building. Parts of these are of later date and therefore fall outside the protection. The main building is situated at some distance from the public road and can be reached via two driveways on the left and right. The grounds are bounded by a yellow brick wall with truncated piers.
The architectural style can be characterized as a personal and sober interpretation of styles such as rationalism, neo-renaissance and chalet style for the residential building and neo-gothic for the chapel.
The symmetrical front facade (south side) of the main building is elongated and can be subdivided into a projecting central section, six bays wide, with three storeys and two flanking wings, each seven bays wide, with two storeys. Each of the three sections has its own hipped roof, which in the middle is interrupted by a gable with a roof slab and the overhang together with the wooden cladding in the gable gives the building a rural character. At the highest point of the central gable a cross is placed. On the roof, which is covered with orange roof tiles, are roof dormers, consisting of a three-part strip window under a half-hip roof, which flank the left and right gable. At a later stage roof windows were installed.
The gable in the central projection is two bays wide, the gables in the wings are each one bay wide. The windows in the first storey are spanned by a natural stone lintel with a segmental arch above. These are absent in the second storey, except in the central projection and below the gables in the wings. In the third storey of the central projection and in the tops of the gables are low two-light windows. In the gable of the central projection are two-light windows with eight-light fanlights installed. Strong similarities with number 55 shows the internal entrance, which is placed precisely in the middle under a large semicircular natural stone arch. Above the natural stone arch is a field framed by natural stone on which the name St Alphonsus is placed. The double doors with fanlights and side windows can be reached by means of three natural stone steps.
Directly to the left of the main facade is the addition, which W.C.A. Kroes designed in the style of the main building. It is a block-shaped extension with two storeys and a flat roof, with windows arranged at regular intervals.
The rear facade is dominated by the priest's choir situated in the middle. This priest's choir consists of three sides, with buttresses between them. In the brick walls are pointed arch windows. Above the priest's choir the gabled roof of the nave projects, which is crowned by an open roof turret. The gutter height of the gabled roof is equal to the gutter height of the main building. The priest's choir is flanked by low rectangular spaces with flat roof, which previously served as sacristy and storage.
Further back the two storeys with the combined hipped roof of the main building are visible. The walls are simply detailed and the rectangular two-light windows with eight-light fanlights are regularly distributed across the facade. In front of the rear facade of the main building is a modern extension with flat roof and glazed walls.
The left side facade is dominated by a one-storey high wing, which is covered with a very shallow-pitched hipped roof. The walls of the wing, which consists half of a veranda, are constructed of large glass surfaces, which are interrupted by narrow wall piers. Continuously throughout are the fanlights, which have a fine-meshed glazing bars.
Remarkable is the further back wall of the nave. This wall is directly connected to the main building. To express the different functions behind the wall the architect placed three pointed arch windows on the left and a cross window to the right of it. Thus the window form indicates the transition from residential section to chapel.
The right side facade is dominated by the large hall added later, which falls outside the protection. On the left is the side facade of the main building, in which modern windows have been installed, which also fall outside the protection. Further back is the side wall of the chapel which is mirror-image identical to the left side view.
Remarkable is an entrance built as a grotto to a small chapel, which is dedicated to Mary and which is situated under the former sacristy.
From the interior the high central hall should be particularly mentioned, which provides space for a double staircase decorated with a wrought-iron handrail. In the corridors a tile pattern on the floors.
Valuation
The former retreat house with chapel and grotto, of general importance because of its architectural-historical value as an intact and rare example of an eclectic architectural style, as well as of the building type retreat house. The building also has cultural-historical value as an example of a building with a function directed towards religious beliefs. The building has ensemble value in relation to the mother house Sint Joseph, also designed by H. Kroes. Both properties occupy an important place in the oeuvre of H. Kroes.
