Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The public primary school in Amsterdam School style; called the Kadeschool at the time of construction, was designed in 1930 by architect H. de Meer on commission from the municipality. The school shows great similarities with the school in Nieuwendam from 1926 by Public Works Amsterdam. The stained glass in the hall is by artist W. van de Walle and produced by the firm Schrier & de Ru from Haarlem.
In 1996 a large-scale renovation took place, in which alterations were carried out entirely according to the original detailing.
Description
The composite building volume of the school consists of two storeys with a high roof truss structure and short side wings. The main volume has a gabled roof covered with black-glazed Roman tiles with four chimneys on the ridge; on the south side with substantial overhang; on the west side the roof is intersected by the transversely positioned right side wing (northeast) with gabled roof. The left side wing (northwest) is formed by a round extension, partly recessed into the main volume, in which the entrance and the staircase are located. This extension is closed off with a lead roof with a lightning conductor on the ridge.
The building is constructed entirely of yellow Dutch bricks in Flemish bond with yellow, flush jointing. The plinth is executed in sintered brick in English bond with red jointing and varies in height. The gable ends are executed with herringbone pattern. The wooden windows consist of series of coupled windows with single or double six-pane fanlights.
The front facade consists in broad terms of three parts: the round risalit with entrance section on the northeast corner, a more or less flat wall with horizontal window strips and the side wing with gable end on the northwest corner. To the left of the round extension is a narrow, lead-clad strip where the roof surface of the main volume slopes through to the height of the plinth. The plinth in vertical bond is built around the extension into a wide band and runs through into the porch. At the top of the extension is a continuous window strip with fixed, four-part windows. The windows are set in wooden frames, the multi-part stiles (with triglyph-like profiling) of which project towards the centre. Thus a bulging window section was created. The extension is drawn through at an oblique angle to the facade. In the oblique part is the porch with the entrance closed off with an iron grille. The double wooden door is provided with push plates, sickle-shaped hinges, two sets of six panes and two coupled seven-part side lights on the left side. The right corner of the porch is emphasised by a round extension, which is partly incorporated into the plinth and at the top is executed in yellow stone and in relief. The relief depicts an ibex with the Gouda coat of arms and an archer.
The middle section of the front facade is strongly divided horizontally by series of coupled windows. The windows are set in wooden frames and stiles, with the horizontal mullions running through and the stiles placed between them. Above the high plinth is a double series of continuous, horizontal windows. To close off the high-reaching gable wall a triple series was realized, which closes round on the left corner. On the right corner this window section is closed off with a flagpole attached vertically to the facade. This series is provided with a lead roof. Far right in this facade section is a single door. The gable end of the side wing has a double door with windows on either side with a single fanlight and at the top a non-original fire door. The windows were originally equipped with a central post. Along the side facades (east and west side) of the side wing are projecting wooden round gutters, which close round on the end. In the west facade are two coupled windows with a single fanlight and central post. The plinth of the east facade is drawn up in the middle to gutter height in a trapezoidal shape. The windows under the gutter are incorporated into this plinth and consist of a series of three coupled, three-part windows with four horizontal glazing bars. The roof surface is interrupted by a series of recessed windows with three glazing bars and furthermore as under the gutter.
The south facade consists of a slightly projecting gable end on the west side with in the first storey a double door with windows (as in the gable end on the north side) and at the top a two-part, trapezoidal window with three horizontal glazing bars. Furthermore in the almost flat facade of the main volume in both storeys are series of coupled, three-part windows with double fanlights. On the upper floor the series consists of four windows and on the first storey of three windows. On the southeast corner is a projecting plinth spanning one storey; in this plinth are a door and three windows with single fanlights. This plinth becomes independent at the corner as a chimney, which extends to halfway up the roof.
The high plinth of the south facade is continued in the east facade, where it is stepped down to normal height. Above the 'steps' window sections are coupled by a vertical, lead-clad post. On the first storey the window consists of a fixed window with deep reveals with above it a slightly projecting, slightly overhanging in width and roughly twice as high stained-glass window. The plinth runs through into the north facade. On the second storey a two-part window with five horizontal glazing bars is placed.
INTERIOR The interior in Amsterdam School style consists of a spacious hall (east side) with adjoining the reception room, a room for medical examination and the staircase. From the hall runs a long corridor with on the south side the classrooms and on the north side the toilet groups. On the west side the original layout was altered for the construction of among others a recreation room and kitchen. On the ground floor there was a gymnasium, which has now been converted into two practical rooms. Otherwise the original layout is intact.
The predominantly plastered hall is characterised by the vaulted ceiling, the cladding of blue tiles, the abundant stained glass in doors and windows and convex roundings of the staircase and fixed bench. The draught vestibule (with original umbrella stand) has a double swing door with coloured stained glass with a seven-part side light, which is also executed in coloured stained glass. The swing door has original handles and push plates. Along the tiled west wall is a fixed bench, which is closed off by a continuous partition wall. The south wall consists of a double swing door (with coloured stained glass) with on either side doors with lights, which are executed with coloured stained glass. In the glass are respectively the texts "medical examination" and "reception room head" (with the image of a book and an inkwell) incorporated. In the east wall is a fixed plant box with above it a fixed window and a stained-glass window. In the glass are among others a globe, books, animals and the coat of arms of Gouda incorporated.
The round staircase (north side) consists of a granite perron staircase with tiled cladding and balustrade. The balustrade is closed off with wrought ironwork. The passage to the corridor is arched. The corridors on the ground floor and the first floor are almost identical. The plastered corridors are provided with a barrel vault. The floors and claddings consist of tiles.
At the entrance of the rooms the corridor is widened, creating niches on either side of the corridor, which on the north side (between the toilet groups) are fitted out as cloakrooms. At the height of each room a projecting 'console' is fitted, which is provided with woodcarving. This carving depicts animal figures (among others elephants, pelicans, squirrels). The doors of the toilet groups have three-part lights. In the walls along the rooms are four-part windows. The rooms have beside the entrance a niche, which is tiled, contains iron grille work (which originally served to screen off the stove) and in which a granite sink is placed.
