Inleiding

Introduction

In 1910 the AMBACHTSSCHOOL for Gouda and Surroundings is founded. In the early 1930s The Hague architect Jos Duijnstee designs a new building for the school with site boundary and accompanying caretaker's dwelling in the style of Nieuwe Zakelijkheid. The school moves in 1932 to Graaf Florisweg 64.

The tile tableaux in the draught lobby are made in 1910-1935 and 1939-1940 by Goedewaagen and designed by a teacher of the school at that time, W. Hogervorst. Part of the stained glass is also by his hand. This stained glass was presented in 1932 by former pupils.

N.B. Originally above the main entrance the name 'Ambachtsschool' was placed in wrought ironwork in Amsterdamse School style.

In 1997 a renovation/remodelling took place, whereby among other things the internal layout was slightly modified. In the process the right corner pavilion and the (rear) end gable of the right wing were remodelled.

Description

The almost symmetrical school building is constructed from an H-shaped floor plan and consists of three storeys under composite hipped roofs with overhang. Parallel to Graaf Florisweg lies the main volume with projecting corner pavilions on either side and two elongated side wings at the rear. In this way a large courtyard has been created at the rear of the main volume. The front forecourt is closed off by a site boundary with railings.

The concrete skeleton structure has brick facades, with both the fairly high sandstone course and the remaining parts laid in Norwegian bond. The roof overhangs are executed with wooden gutters. The facades built up above the roof line are finished with gres edges.

The hipped roofs are covered with red, improved Dutch tiles with a number of brick chimneys on the ridge; the long sides of the main volume and the wings are cut through on the rear side (courtyard side) by elongated, low roof dormers. In the dormers are rows of windows with composite frames. The facades are articulated by rows of flush windows consisting of elongated, horizontal window openings, in which composite steel frames with multi-part steel sashes are placed; these sashes lie almost flat in the facade plane, in shallow recesses. The facade piers are interrupted by the concrete columns of the structure, which are not here encased in masonry. Only at the windows at the height of the sandstone course are the columns encased. Fixed panes are combined with hinged sashes. Through the variation in thickness of the steel mullions the horizontality is strongly emphasized. The lekdorpels consist of narrow, barely protruding gres tiles.

The almost symmetrical front facade on a U-shaped floor plan consists of the elongated central section of the main volume and the two projecting corner pavilions. The central section in turn is divided into a section with rows of windows and, on either side thereof, vertical projecting sections, in which the entrance and stairwells are located; these facade sections are all – at various heights – built up above the roof line.

The central section of the front facade has three rows of windows placed between vertical concrete columns. The windows on the first storey consist of two horizontal rows of window openings, divided by a continuous, cantilevered concrete band: above the band the windows consist of ten two-part sashes and below the band of three-part sashes. The latter sashes consist of two small sections on either side of an elongated large pane in the middle. Below the band the concrete columns are encased and thus form part of the dark sandstone course. The second and third storeys have windows with fifteen two-part sashes – and entirely on the left nine. To the left and right of this central section is a facade section under a lower-placed cantilevered roof line with vertically placed windows with fixed panes with a hinged section in each storey. In the higher vertical, projecting sections are elongated, narrow window openings, in which steel frames with stained glass are placed. On the right the vertical accent is strongest, as the main entrance is placed here and furthermore a tall, independent stair tower (with clock mechanism) is erected. This stair tower consists of various recessed sections, which are independently finished with gres edges and concrete coping slabs. Moreover decorative wrought ironwork runs along the facades of the tower, which in style recalls the Amsterdamse School.

The entrance section is sheltered by a substantial concrete overhang, which rests on concrete consoles. The brick stoop consists of three steps and is flanked by a stepped-down wall. The door is not original.

The lower, projecting corner pavilions are almost symmetrical. In the end gables, which are finished with an overhang, are rows of three windows. On the first floor the windows consist of three sashes (in the sandstone course) under a continuous band and above three composite sashes, which are cut through by the concrete structure. On the upper floor the windows are narrower. The door in the right pavilion is not original (placed where a window was). The inner facades facing the schoolyard are built up above the roof line. There are three rows of windows, the lowest row under a continuous band. The inner facade of the left pavilion has recently been fitted with double doors.

The right side facade of the school building consists from left to right of the corner pavilion, the central section in which an entrance is placed, and the elongated side wing, which is set back slightly relative to the central section. The facade of the corner pavilion is articulated like the inner facade (facing the schoolyard). The central section consists of a risalit of three bays under a transversely-placed hipped roof; the central axis of the risalit cuts through the roof. On the ground floor is an entrance at a brick stoop of two steps with a brick wall beside it and at the height of the entrance two perpendicularly-placed walls; the entrance with windows is placed under a concrete canopy, which runs across the full width of the risalit. To the left of it is a double door. In the angle between the risalit and the rear wing a one-storey extension with a flat roof is realized. In it are four windows realized above and below a band. The roof is finished with gres edges. The facade of the rear wing contains elongated rows of windows, which are alternated by individual vertical axes. There is an overhang – running over almost the full length. From the central section to the second axis the facade is articulated like the front facade; the facade of the first axis is built up lower. At the second axis on the ground floor is a double door. From the second axis the windows on each floor consist of identical rows of facade sections. A third axis – built up lower like the first – closes off the facade.

The rear facade of the main volume has a central risalit. On either side of this risalit are rows of horizontal windows on each floor. The horizontal window strips in the risalit are approximately half the standard window height and contain rows of four two-part sashes.

The inner facade of the right side wing also falls into three sections. To the right of the higher erected external stairwell is a facade without height differences – with a continuous overhang. The facade articulation corresponds broadly with the rear facade. There are two double doors. A vertical axis interrupts the horizontality and contains narrow windows with single sashes on the floors. On the left a section of the facade cladding is renewed with plastic frames and a new door, which are not included in the protection. This facade is reduced in height at the end. In this last bay are windows with multi-part sashes. The inner facade of the left side wing again consists of three sections. The first section is a continuation of the facade articulation of the rear facade of the main volume. Next is a recessed, largely blank facade. In the extension of this wing stands a two-storey high former gymnasium. The hipped roof has an overhang. The brick facade on the first floor is built up on either side of the rows with windows up to the eaves. The five windows on the second floor are placed in concrete facades. On the first floor are three double doors, which are provided with three panes with horizontal glazing bars.

The INTERIOR of the school has largely retained its original layout. The interior consists of a ground floor, two floors and an attic. The layout of the main building on the ground floor has been modified. Here is among other things the director's office, which is executed with wooden panelling. On the floors there are three rooms each. The side wings have long continuous corridors along the courtyard side, alongside which the rooms are located. The hall is provided with tiled panelling, tile tableaux and paintings (the latter placed from 1944 onwards). In the hall is a semi-circular, wooden porter's lodge. In the austere stairwell the stained glass in the stair lights stands out in particular. The glass depicts the various crafts for which the school provides training.

The forecourt of the school is closed off by a SITE BOUNDARY consisting of a wrought-iron railing between brick pillars and standing on a brick plinth. The iron entrance gate with double swing wings is placed between two higher-built pillars crowned by a wrought-iron lantern. Between the school and the dwelling is also an iron gate with double swing wings.
