Inleiding

Introduction

FUNERARY CHAPEL in Neo-Romanesque architectural style from 1890 designed by architect C.P.W. Dessing who established himself as a contractor-architect in Gouda around 1870. Dessing became particularly known for the construction of a number of Neo-Gothic churches, of which his design for the St. Jozef (the present Gouwe Kerk from 1904) is the most important.

The chapel is situated on the R.C. cemetery on the Graaf Florisweg to the north-east of the centre of Gouda. The deep plot extends through to the railway line behind. Along the Graaf Florisweg the cemetery is enclosed by a fence with masonry piers from the nineteen-thirties. Behind the fence is a forecourt with parking facilities and a monumental red beech and a plane tree stand. To the left of the entrance a service lodge from the same period as the chapel. Residence and fencing are of subordinate importance for protection and not worthy of protection.

The chapel is situated in the middle of the cemetery on an earthen elevation. The stained glass windows in the chapel date from 1930 and are signed by Alex Asperslagh. Asperslagh worked from 1929 in the glass studio of Liefkes in The Hague, where he developed a figurative and highly realistic style.

Against the apse and on the cemetery lie some family graves from the end of the nineteenth and from the beginning of the twentieth century. Most graves have, however, been cleared and replaced by more recent ones.

Description

The chapel is constructed in dark brick on a stuccoed plinth from a Greek cross-shaped ground plan under a composite gabled roof with slate in bond; spout gables with along the facade edge a climbing round-arch frieze and crowned by a cross finial; simple wooden fascias. The north-facing, symmetrical front facade is decorated along the facade edge with a climbing round-arch frieze on sandstone setting stones and crowned by a finial in the form of a cross. On the west side between the main nave and the transept is an octagonal bell tower crowned by a slightly constricted spire with slate in bond.

The facades are fitted with stepped corner quoins with natural stone coping and are articulated by round-arch windows with leaded glass windows; these windows have wooden frames, brick arch elements and tiled window sills. In the front facade and the transept large artificial stone round-arch windows with a rose window with artificial stone tracery.

Central in the front facade is the main entrance placed in a projecting main portal with spout gable crowned by an artificial stone finial. The double doors are cladded with bead moulding and have elegant wrought-iron anchors; above the door a steel profile beam, on which a round-arch-shaped fanlight with artificial stone tracery rests. At the top a round facade stone of sandstone. In both side facades of the portal a narrow round-arch small window. Above the portal a large sandstone rose window is fitted, below which four sandstone small columns. The portal is flanked by blind arch fields.

The tower has on all eight sides blind round-arch spandrels and five narrow round-arch tracer windows with roll mouldings; at the top two sound holes.

The right and left side facades of the chapel are identical except for the bell tower. In these facades a sandstone rose window with below it four small columns as in the front facade. In the side facades of the transept blind round-arch spandrels.

On the rear facade of the chapel a five-sided apse over virtually the full facade height with on either side a single-storey ancillary building. The ancillary buildings form with the apse a straight rear facade where five hardstone sarcophagi lie against. At the middle grave a standing marble sculpture of a Christ figure. On the side facades of the ancillary buildings also a number of natural stone sarcophagi. In the side facades two small round-arch windows with grilles of ornamental ironwork.

The INTERIOR is more or less intact. At the entrance two natural stone holy water fonts. On the right side a choir balcony and the entrance to the bell tower. Spiral staircase in the bell tower. Next to the site of the altar a hardstone nameplate from 1890 in which the dean and pastor of Gouda Mr. Malingré is named. In the chapel three windows designed by Asperslagh with stylised depictions of a peacock, an eagle and the Christ figure. Under the floor covering the original wooden floor.

Valuation

The chapel with its associated interior is of general importance by virtue of cultural-historical value. This is a good example of a late 19th-century Roman Catholic chapel in Neo-Romanesque style by the Gouda architect Dessing.

The chapel is of general importance by virtue of the architectural-historical value, by virtue of the recognisable typology and the Neo-Romanesque detailing.

The chapel is virtually intact in main form, detailing and material use. The interior is almost intact and also of importance by virtue of the leaded glass windows by Asperslagh and the natural stone holy water fonts of value.
