Inleiding

Introduction

The LOCK OFFICE annexe YARN OFFICE from 1931-1932 was built for the collection of lock fees and forms part of the Julianasluis. In one of the wings of the lock office the building also contains a transformer house. The office building situated halfway along the lock, on the west side, is characterised by a somewhat Expressionistic design, which displays a stylistic affinity with the architecture of the later phase of the Amsterdam School and the more austere variant thereof, the New The Hague School. An overarching term such as INTERWAR ARCHITECTURE is also a usable stylistic designation in this case. The building underwent a modernisation in the nineteen-eighties of the 20th century, which concerned mainly the interior.

Description

Office building constructed in fair-faced brickwork above trasrames of clinker tiles, with a cross-shaped floor plan, with projecting, varying in height hipped roofs covered with slate (Meuse covering) with curved sagging and profiled gutter edges.

The building is provided with straight-closed window openings with sill spats of stoneware tiles beneath the windows; a number of the windows are moreover provided with the original steel frames. The symmetrical five-sided end side of the building facing the lock is provided with a broad window section extending across all sides, which provides a clear view over the lock. The slightly wider and slightly taller rising central part of the building is provided with a roof turret clad with zinc plates containing a clock and a clock face on the north and south sides; finished corners and a tent roof topped by a weathervane with a lion. On the ridge there is also a relatively small, masonry chimney. The north facade of the central part contains a recessed glazed door with wrought-iron window decoration. The window running to the left around the corner here to the right is positioned with the entrance under a broad concrete lintel. On the left in this facade is the coat of arms of the province of South Holland, positioned under a rolling course, in the form of a glazed ceramic plaque with a standing, heraldic lion executed in relief. The right (northern) wing contains a door in the facade facing the lock and a series of five narrow windows in the north facade. The rear facade contains a central pavilion with a glazed door, a narrow small window and a larger window, all of which are positioned under a lintel. The southern wing contains among other things a steel door, behind which there is a transformer. The south facade of the central part contains a foundation plaque positioned between rolling courses with the text executed in relief "JULIANASLUIS BUILT IN THE YEARS 1931-1932 PURSUANT TO THE DECISION OF THE STATES OF SOUTH HOLLAND DATED 16 JULY 1918 no. LX WITH THE COOPERATION OF THE KINGDOM OF THE NETHERLANDS".

Valuation

The multifunctional lock building is of general interest as a characterising component of a lock complex that is valuable from a cultural historical and architectural historical perspective.

The building is of cultural historical interest as part of a lock, which is a distinctive expression of a typological development in lock construction in the Netherlands.

The building is of architectural historical interest on account of the principal mass characteristic of the building period, on account of the detailing and on account of the use of materials.

The building has situational and ensemble value as a prominent component of a complex and a large-scale hydraulic engineering structure, which is important both for shipping and for the water management of Gouda and surrounding areas.

The building is also of interest on account of its recognisability and on account of the considerable degree of integrity of the exterior.
