Inleiding
De SCHUTSLUIS dateert uit 1931-'32 en maakt deel uit van Julianasluis die verder bestaat uit een bedieningsgebouw (met Garenskantoor) (b), twee vernieuwde stalen ophaalbruggen (die buiten rijksbescherming vallen) met twee brugwachtershuisjes (c), en twee bedieningsgebouwtjes (d) voor de rioolschuiven.
Omschrijving
De schutsluis heeft een rechte sluiskolk van 12 m. breed en 110 m. lang. De sluiskolk heeft betonnen kademuren en granieten kaderanden met aan weerszijden trappen van graniet. Langs de muren een reeks vertikaal geplaatste bielsen die als afstootpalen dienen. De stalen sluisdeuren schuiven in westelijke richting waar de sluiskassen zijn gesitueerd. De hoogte van de deuren is gelijk met het wegdek.
Aan de kade staat een portaalkraan om de roldeuren te verwisselen. De sluis kan schepen tot 2000 ton doorlaten. Aan weerszijden van de sluisdeuren staan bedieningsgebouwtjes.

De schutsluis heeft ensemblewaarde vanwege de samenhang met de overige objecten van het sluizencomplex.
De schutsluis is van algemeen belang wegens cultuurhistorische waarde vanwege de geschiedenis van de doorvaart- en handelsfunctie van de stad Gouda.

The LOCK dates from 1931-'32 and forms part of Julianasluis which further consists of an operating building (with Garen office) (b), two renewed steel lifting bridges (which fall outside national protection) with two bridge keeper's houses (c), and two operating buildings (d) for the sewer gates.
Description
The lock has a straight lock chamber 12 m. wide and 110 m. long. The lock chamber has concrete quay walls and granite quay edges with stairs of granite on either side. Along the walls a series of vertically placed timbers which serve as fenders. The steel lock gates slide in a westerly direction where the lock cases are situated. The height of the gates is level with the road deck.
A gantry crane stands at the quay to replace the roller doors. The lock can accommodate ships up to 2000 tons. On either side of the lock gates stand operating buildings.

The lock has ensemble value because of the connection with the other objects of the lock complex.
