Inleiding

Het Rijnland Mr. P.A. Pynacker Hordijk gemaal is in 1935/1936 gebouwd in Zakelijk Expressionistische stijl.

Introduction

The Rijnland Mr. P.A. Pynacker Hordijk pumping station was built in 1935/1936 in Business Expressionist style. The 'boezem pumping station and inlet installation Gouda' still functions with the original Werkspoor N.V. diesel pump installation from 1932/1933. The three six-cylinder diesel engines of 460 HP (339kW), type TM 356, drive an equal number of horizontally positioned centrifugal pumps by means of a long vertical drive shaft. The transmission is effected via conical gears. The pumps are positioned low and are located in the cellar. The pumps have a capacity of 10m3/sec (both inward and outward). The pumping station can discharge 35m3/sec excess water and admit 25 m3/sec. The average water throughput during discharge is 2076m3/min. On the side of the Gouwe Canal a level of approximately 60 centimetres below NAP (level dependent on the season) must be maintained. For natural inlet, three inlet pipes are located beneath the pumping station, whereby the level can be maintained even in dry periods. Moreover, through this the water can be refreshed and the Rijnland boezem replenished. The artificial inlet must occur at a level lower than NAP -0.45. The average water throughput is then 1500m3/min..

Two of the originally three fuel tanks of 70,000 litres are present. In 1950 the current inlet installation was fitted. The inlet pipes were manufactured by Rademakers Rotterdam Holland.

N.B.1. In 1953 an extension was added to the southwest corner.

N.B.2. In the basement and the canteen, modifications resulting from the Working Conditions Act have been carried out.

Description

The elongated main building is constructed from a rectangular ground plan. It has a flat roof with an overhang. The main volume consists of a basement below ground level and one high storey above it. The basement is extended on the south side (where the fuel tanks are located). On the north side the facades of the basement and main volume form one entity.

The main building is constructed in yellow brick in Norwegian bond. On the north and south sides there are elongated upright windows. The fixed windows with hinged lights at the top are executed with iron frames. The windows are horizontally connected by a continuous, slightly projecting gravel-concrete band. The sills are made of granite. The remaining window sections consist of horizontal strips of coupled windows. The pilasters consist of masonry in combination with granite plinth stones and plinths. The windows are connected at the top and bottom by continuous, slightly projecting concrete drip mouldings and granite sill plates.

In the eastern gable is the entrance. This consists of a wide stoop with three steps, which are clad with ochre-coloured and yellow tiles. This tiling continues into the interior. The entrance is closed at the top with a concrete (painted white) canopy. The double steel doors are fitted with sidelights, all of which are glazed. Above the entrance is a horizontal, six-part window section. Above these windows is an iron flagpole.

The south facade has a three-part window on the southeast side. Furthermore, there are upright windows over virtually the entire facade length. The two remaining fuel tanks project above the basement. Furthermore, there are masonry sump structures with concrete deck plates and iron railings here. On the three heads of these structures are the inlet installations. In the sumps there are double slot-beam channels.

In the west facade there is a large entrance door and a horizontal, six-part window section.

The north facade has rows of upright windows, which are intersected by chimneys that are half-recessed into the facade and project above the roof. Below the upright window sections is a row of single and coupled horizontal windows. On the northwest side is a door under a projecting drip moulding. To the facade is attached an iron construction for the insertion of boards. These boards serve to close off the inlets during maintenance work. On the north side there are also iron screening gratings, between and alongside which are concrete service bridges with iron operating mechanisms. The almost intact interior consists of one large space with a basement below it. The walls consist of yellow brick in clezoor bond, of which the continuously running 'wainscoting' is made of glazed brick. Standing freely within the brick walls is the iron, purely functional structure, which is built up from steel profiles. The ceiling consists of concrete cassettes. On the east side is the entrance with a draught vestibule and to its left and right a sump chamber and a switchroom. Above the doors of the sump chamber and switchroom roller shutters have been fitted. The walls of the elongated draught vestibule step back in a staggered manner. The vestibule widens in this way towards the main space. The stuccoed ceiling of the draught vestibule continues and widens, then ends as a projecting band. The draught door is set back in relation to the main space. The steel, double draught door is identical to the external door. A stoop with three steps connects the draught vestibule with the lower floor level. The floor of the main space and entrance hall consists of ochre-coloured and yellow tiles, which are also used in various platforms. On these elevations stand, among other things, the drive motors of the gate openings. On the upper floor is the canteen with a horizontal strip of windows with renewed frames. In the basement the raw concrete structure with wooden formwork relief is visible. Here the pumps are positioned and part of the space is separated off as a staff room.

Valuation

The Rijnland Mr. P.A. Pynacker Hordijk pumping station is of general importance because of its cultural and architectural historical value.

The Rijnland Mr. P.A. Pynacker Hordijk pumping station is of general cultural historical importance because of the water management significance of the pumping station and as a well-preserved example of a pumping station from the nineteen-thirties.

The pumping station is of general architectural historical importance as a representative example of the Business Expressionist style and because of the characteristic detailing and use of materials.
