Inleiding
GEDENKTEKEN, in een aan het Eclectisme verwante bouwstijl, is op 1 juli 1880 onthuld ter herinnering aan uit Gouda afkomstige Cornelis en Frederik de Houtman, twee vooraanstaande Nederlandse zeevaarders. Cornelis (Gouda, ca. 1565- voor Atjeh 11-9-1599) leidde in 1595 de 'Eerste Schipvaart' van Nederland naar Oost-Indië, samen met zijn broer Frederik (Gouda 1571-Alkmaar 21-10-1627). Tijdens de tweede reis werd Cornelis vermoord en Frederik gevangen genomen door de sultan van Atjeh. Na zijn vrijlating was hij ondermeer eerste gouveneur van Amboina (1605-1611), Raad van Indië (1619) en gouveneur van de Molukken (1621-1623). Frederik kreeg tevens bekend door zijn studies en publicaties over de Maleische taal en sterrenkunde, waarbij hij een aantal nieuwe sterrenbeelden formeerde.
Het gedenkteken ligt aan de oostzijde van het park, op een kruising van wandelpaden, nabij het wandelpad in de richting van een vaste brug over de Fluwelen brug (ter plaatste van het voormalige Rijnlands gemaal).
Omschrijving
Hardstenen gedenkzuil op vierkant grondvlak, waarvan de uitkragende sokkel is geplaatst op een basis van twee traptreden. De schacht heeft een horizontale tweedeling. In de onderste bevindt zich aan elke zijde een ondiep rond spaarveld, waaruit een koperen scheepsboeg steekt met in basreliëf de namen: 'Amstelredam, Hollandia, Mauritius en Duyfken'.
In de bovenste geleding is aan de noordzijde met vergulde letter de tekst aangebracht: 'Gebr. Cornelis en Frederik de Houtman, inboorlingen en burgers van Gouda, als grondleggers van het verbond van Nederland met Insulinde/het dankbare nageslacht'. Aan respectievelijk de oost-, zuid- en westzijde staat in een ondiep rond spaarveld: '1596', wapenschild van Gouda en '1880' De zandstenen bekroning van de zuil bestaat uit een allegorische voorstelling op het ontdekken van de wereld, hetgeen blijkt uit elementen als kaarten, wereldbol en verrekijker.
De bestrating rondom de gedenkzuil wordt op de vier hoeken begrensd door vier lage, ronde pijlers met afgeronde toppen, die met elkaar verbonden worden door smeedijzeren kettingen.

Introduction
MEMORIAL, in an architectural style related to Eclecticism, was unveiled on 1 July 1880 in memory of Cornelis and Frederik de Houtman, two prominent Dutch seafarers from Gouda. Cornelis (Gouda, ca. 1565 - before Atjeh 11-9-1599) led the 'First Voyage' of the Netherlands to the East Indies in 1595, together with his brother Frederik (Gouda 1571 - Alkmaar 21-10-1627). During the second voyage Cornelis was murdered and Frederik was captured by the sultan of Atjeh. After his release he was, among other things, first governor of Amboyna (1605-1611), Councillor of the Indies (1619) and governor of the Moluccas (1621-1623). Frederik also became known through his studies and publications on the Malay language and astronomy, during which he formed a number of new constellations.
The memorial is located on the east side of the park, at a crossing of walking paths, near the walking path in the direction of a fixed bridge over the Fluwelen brug (at the location of the former Rijnlands pump house).

Hardstone memorial column on square ground plan, of which the projecting pedestal is placed on a base of two steps. The shaft has a horizontal division into two sections. In the lower section there is on each side a shallow round spandrel, from which a copper ship's bow protrudes with in bas-relief the names: 'Amstelredam, Hollandia, Mauritius and Duyfken'.
In the upper section, on the north side in gilded letters the text is placed: 'Brothers Cornelis and Frederik de Houtman, inhabitants and citizens of Gouda, as founders of the bond of the Netherlands with the East Indies / the grateful posterity'. On the east, south and west sides respectively, in a shallow round spandrel: '1596', coat of arms of Gouda and '1880'. The sandstone coping of the column consists of an allegorical representation of the discovery of the world, as is evident from elements such as maps, globe and telescope.
The paving around the memorial column is bounded at the four corners by four low, round pillars with rounded tops, which are connected to each other by wrought-iron chains.
