Inleiding
GEDENKTEKEN met FONTEIN uit 1895 is gebouwd ter herinnering aan de Goudse burgemeester mr. A.A. van Bergen IJzendoorn gebouwd in een aan het Eclectisme verwant bouwstijl, waarbij de ruw behakte blokken het geheel een rustiek karakter geven. De fontein functioneert anno 1997 niet (meer).
Het gedenkteken ligt aan de voet van een schuine helling, nabij stellingmolen 't Slot.
Omschrijving
Het gedenkteken is opgetrokken op een rechthoekig grondvlak uit rode granieten ruw behakte blokken, met een waterbassin dat bestaat uit twee niveau's.
Het wordt aan de achterzijde afgesloten door een hoge wand met, steile, inzwenkende zijkanten en een gekanteelde bekroning. De beide zijkanten hebben een lagere borstwering met ezelsrug, die geflankeerd door robuuste pinakels, trapsgewijs verspringt. De top van de pinakels hebben de vorm van haaks op elkaar geplaatste ezelsruggen. Het met leisteen bekleedde, bassin heeft aan de voorzijde een relatief lage borstwering met daarboven een getordeerde ijzeren stang.
In de middenas tegen de achterwand is een halfcirkelvormig spaarbekken geplaatst met enkele kleine ronde openingen, waaruit het water in het grote bassin kan lopen. De koperen waterspuwer erboven is niet meer aanwezig. Erboven staat op het halfrond gesloten gepolijst spaarveld van porfier met in goudkleurige letters de volgende tekst: 'DANKBARE/ HULDE/AAN ONZEN/BURGEMEESTER/Mr/A.A. VAN BERGEN/IJZENDOORN/OVERLEDEN/16 JANUARI 1895'. De achterzijde is het ruwbehakte spaarveld onbewerkt.

A MONUMENT with FOUNTAIN from 1895 was built in memory of the Gouda burgemeester mr. A.A. van Bergen IJzendoorn in a style related to Eclecticism, in which the roughly hewn blocks give the whole a rustic character. The fountain does not function as of 1997 (anymore).

Description
The monument is constructed on a rectangular footprint from red granite roughly hewn blocks, with a water basin consisting of two levels.
It is closed at the rear by a high wall with steep, inward-sloping sides and a crenellated top. Both sides have a lower breastwork with saddle back, flanked by robust pinnacles, stepping back in stages. The tops of the pinnacles have the form of saddle backs placed at right angles to each other. The basin, clad with slate, has a relatively low breastwork at the front with above it a twisted iron rod.
In the central axis against the rear wall is a semicircular collecting basin placed with a few small round openings, from which water can run into the large basin. The copper water spout above it is no longer present. Above this stands on the half-closed polished collecting field of porphyry with gold-coloured letters the following text: 'GRATEFUL/ TRIBUTE/TO OUR/BURGEMEESTER/Mr/A.A. VAN BERGEN/IJZENDOORN/DIED/16 JANUARY 1895'. The rear has the roughly hewn collecting field unworked.
