Inleiding

Introduction

TOWN HALL, built in 1911 according to a design by the then municipal architect Johannes Jansen in a formal style based on Dutch classicism. The town hall stands in the northern corner of the square. The concave front facade (S) and both side facades are representative in character, the inconspicuous convex rear facade (N) is executed more soberly.

N.B. The attached wing at the rear is of minor importance.

Description

Town hall built on a butterfly-shaped ground plan consisting of ground floor, first floor (piano nobile) and roof storey under a hipped roof with hip rafter and slate in Maas courses. The hipped roof has a wide overhang all around. The roof has moulded chimney stacks with chimney caps at the four ridge points. Above the entrance in the roof slope is an octagonal lantern with a smaller roof dormer and weather vane in the form of a three-masted ship. The lantern has arched multi-pane windows.

The roof slopes above both side facades and above the rear facade each have centrally placed roof dormers with multi-pane casement windows, the glazing bars of which correspond to those of the cross windows on the piano nobile and ground floor. All windows are provided with multi-pane glazing bars. Most windows have cross windows.

The town hall is virtually symmetrical in layout. The brickwork, constructed in red brick, is vertically articulated by pilasters with substantial Ionic capitals executed in sandstone at the corners and on either side of the central section on the front (S). Hardstone is used, amongst other things, in the plinth, in the steps of the entrance platform and in the former basin in front of the platform. At the level of the floors of the piano nobile and roof storey there are ornamental wall anchors.

At the front (S) the emphasis is on the central section, decorated in Louis XV style and executed in sandstone, with a high entrance platform that is accessed via two flights of stairs parallel to the wings of the building. The platform gives access to the main entrance on the piano nobile. The main entrance contains double panelled doors with a relieving arch and a fanlight with oculus. The same window type is also found in the gable top of the central section. The central section is flanked on either side by a slanting projecting facade plane, each with one window axis in which there is a sash window with multi-pane glazing bars on the piano nobile and below it a festoon. Both side facades (W and E) each have three window axes with smaller cross windows on the ground floor than on the piano nobile. The cross windows on the ground floor have shutters for the lower panes. The west facade has a memorial stone. The east facade differs from the west facade in the middle window axis. This axis has a panelled door flanked by a relieved window on the ground floor, on the piano nobile a large multi-pane frame with a relieving arch and above this window a facade decoration. Above this facade decoration the middle window axis is emphasized by an arch in the cornice.

The rear consists of three facade planes. The central facade plane is the widest. This facade plane has various wooden windows distributed irregularly across the facade, differing in shape and size. The facade plane to the left of it has three four-pane windows on the ground floor and a window placed across the corner with the central facade plane on the first floor. The facade plane to the right has been modified to accommodate the connection with the attached wing.

Valuation

The town hall is of general importance because of its architectural-historical value as a well-preserved example of a building style inspired by a reorientation towards traditional building methods with characteristics from neo-Renaissance and 'UM 1800'. Of cultural-historical importance as a particular expression of an early 20th-century town hall in a historicizing style. The town hall has situational value through its prominent urban planning location.
