Inleiding.
Circa vijftig meter ten zuiden van de Provinciale weg, iets ten oosten van Doeveren, langs de zuidelijke maasdijk bevindt zich de Gendensche SLUIS, uitgevoerd als duiker, die omstreeks 1850 in Ambachtelijk Traditionele vormen is opgetrokken maar mogelijk en oudere kern heeft. De sluis diende voor uitwatering van de polder op het Oude Maasje. In deze hoedanigheid was de sluis van belang voor de waterhuishouding van de vestingstad Heusden. Sinds het graven van de Bergse Maas (1896-1904) vervult de sluis geen directe waterstaatkundige functie meer.
Omschrijving.
Symmetrisch opgebouwd bakstenen sluisje met stenen tongewelf. De sluis heeft mogelijk een oudere kern. De vier keermuren hebben hardstenen afdekplaten. De keermuren zijn aflopend en wijken alle uit naar de buitenkant. Y-vormige smeedijzeren staafankers op de koppen van de keermuren. De machinaal vervaardigde baksteen is gemetseld in kruisverband, bij de keermuren verlevendigd met vlechtingen.
De sluisopening is afsluitbaar door een houten hefdeur in een hardstenen sponning. De hefdeur kan worden bediend door een ijzeren tandwielkast met draaizwengel en een getande ijzeren heugelstang.
Waardering.
De Gendensche sluis is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuurhistorische waarden die het object bezit als bijzondere uitdrukking van zowel een geografisch/landschappelijke als een technische ontwikkeling. De Gendensche sluis heeft ensemblewaarden vanwege de bijzondere betekenis van het object voor de ontwikkeling van de waterstaatkundige huishouding van de streek rond de landelijk belangrijke vestingstad Heusden en vanwege de historisch ruimtelijke relatie met de aanwezige waterwegen.

Introduction.
Approximately fifty metres south of the Provincial road, slightly east of Doeveren, along the southern Meuse dyke is the Gendensche SLUICE, executed as a culvert, which was erected circa 1850 in Craftsman Traditional forms but possibly has an older core. The sluice served for drainage of the polder on the Oude Maasje. In this capacity the sluice was important for the water management of the fortified town of Heusden. Since the excavation of the Bergse Maas (1896-1904) the sluice has no longer fulfilled a direct water management function.
Description.
Symmetrically constructed brick sluice with stone barrel vault. The sluice possibly has an older core. The four gate walls have sandstone capping plates. The gate walls are sloping and all angle outwards to the outside. Y-shaped wrought-iron bar ties on the heads of the gate walls. The machine-made brick is laid in cross bond, enlivened at the gate walls with plaiting.
The sluice opening can be closed by a wooden lift gate in a sandstone rebate. The lift gate can be operated by an iron gear box with hand crank and a toothed iron hoist rod.
Valuation.
The Gendensche sluice is of general importance because of the cultural-historical values which the object possesses as a particular expression of both a geographical/landscape and a technical development. The Gendensche sluice has ensemble values because of the particular importance of the object for the development of the water management of the area around the regionally important fortified town of Heusden and because of the historical spatial relationship with the existing waterways.
