The register's description

Inleiding.

Introduction.

Directly to the southwest of the built-up area of Doeveren, at the location where the presumed fifteenth-century Elshoutse Zeedijk is flanked by two wheeles, in the dike body, is the Bovenlandsche SLUICE (place name). This sluice, erected in mid-nineteenth century Craftwork Traditional forms, no longer fulfils a water management function due to the absence of sluice doors and sluice beams. In its current appearance, the sluice may well be a modernisation of an older sluice at that location. Formerly, the sluice probably served a function that was simultaneously inundating, outfalling and water-retaining, and as such was important for the water management of the former fortified city Heusden. The sluice is an important component of the belt of various sluices and sluice types around Heusden.

Description.

The sluice is built in handmade brick with some renewals from around 1900 in machine-made brick, laid in English bond. On the south side there are wattles and hardstone cover plates. Striking is the hardstone rabbet for the sluice beams with a water level scale in ells. This extends over the full height of the sluice. On the inside, wrought-iron rod anchors are attached, seemingly randomly, each connected by means of a heavy wrought-iron rod to an opposite anchor; this is to prevent the sluice walls from subsiding. Of importance is further the water level stone located on the outfalling side with the inscription 3,865 m. above N.A.P. On the outfalling side, the sluice is further executed with a spherical sluice basin, the function of which remains unclear for now. Sluice beams and possible pointed doors (of which the possible hinges still remain) have disappeared. The deck of the sluice is concrete and was installed around 1920-1930. The austere wrought-iron railings, curled at the ends, which are located on it date from around 1900.

Valuation.

The Bovenlandsche sluice is of general interest owing to the cultural-historical values which the object possesses as a distinctive expression of both a geographical/landscape and a technical development. The Bovenlandsche sluice has ensemble values owing to the particular significance of the object for the development of the water management of the region around the nationally important fortified city Heusden and owing to the historically spatial relationship with the existing waterways and the other two, likewise protected, small sluices in the Elshoutsedijk.
