Inleiding.
Ten zuidwesten van de bebouwde kom van Doeveren bevindt zich, in het dijklichaam van de vermoedelijk vijftiende-eeuwse Elshoutse Zeedijk de Oud-Heusdensche SLUIS (toponiem) 1. Deze in het midden van de negentiende eeuw in Ambachtelijk Traditionele vormen opgetrokken sluis met twee kokers vervult tegenwoordig geen waterstaatkundige functie meer. In de huidige verschijningsvorm is de sluis wellicht een modernisering van een oudere sluis op die plaats. Eertijds vervulde de sluis zowel een uitwaterende als waterkerende functie en had als zodanig belang voor de waterstaatkundige huishouding van de voormalige vestingstad Heusden. De sluis is een belangrijk onderdeel van de gordel van diverse sluizen en sluistypes rondom Heusden en voerde het water dat in het zuidelijke gebied van de gemeente was verzameld buitendijks af in Het Loopken.
Omschrijving.
De sluis bevindt zich enkele honderden meters ten zuiden van de in dezelfde dijk gelegen Bovenlandsche sluis en slechts een twintigtal meters ten noorden van de Oud-Heusdensche sluis 2. De als duiker uitgevoerde sluis heeft twee parallelle kokers met gemetselde bakstenen wanden en tongewelven. Elke koker heeft twee paar sluisdeuren waarvan die aan de buitendijkse zijde het hoogst zijn. Alle deuren zijn overigens sterk beschadigd en vervallen. In de sluis is zowel een machinale baksteen als een IJsselsteen gebruikt. Dit laatste wijst op een sluiskern die in oorsprong ouder is dan de huidige verschijningsvorm doet vermoeden. De machinale baksteen bevindt zich vooral aan de buitenzijde en duidt op een modernisering van omstreeks 1900. Op de hoekpunten van de keermuren zijn hardstenen blokken verwerkt. In deze muren zijn eveneens enkele smeedijzeren staafankers verwerkt. Smeedijzeren staafankers bevinden zich tevens in het muurwerk boven de sluiskokers.
Waardering.
De Oud-Heusdensche sluis 1 is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuurhistorische waarden die het object bezit als bijzondere uitdrukking van zowel een geografisch/landschappelijke als een technische ontwikkeling. De Oud-Heusdensche sluis 1 heeft ensemblewaarden vanwege de bijzondere betekenis van het object voor de ontwikkeling van de waterstaatkundige huishouding van de streek rond de landelijk belangrijke vestingstad Heusden en vanwege de historisch ruimtelijke relatie met de aanwezige waterwegen en de andere twee, eveneens beschermde, sluisjes in de Elshoutsedijk.

Introduction.
To the southwest of the built-up area of Doeveren, in the dike body of the presumed fifteenth-century Elshoutse Zeedijk lies the Oud-Heusdensche SLUICE (place name) 1. This sluice with two culverts, erected in mid-nineteenth century Craftwork Traditional forms, no longer fulfils a water management function today. In its current appearance, the sluice may well be a modernisation of an older sluice at that location. Formerly, the sluice served both an outfalling and water-retaining function and as such had significance for the water management of the former fortified city Heusden. The sluice is an important component of the belt of various sluices and sluice types around Heusden and discharged the water that had been collected in the southern area of the municipality outside the dike into Het Loopken.
Description.
The sluice is located several hundred metres to the south of the Bovenlandsche sluice located in the same dike and only some twenty metres to the north of the Oud-Heusdensche sluice 2. The sluice, executed as a culvert, has two parallel culverts with mortared brick walls and barrel vaults. Each culvert has two pairs of sluice doors, of which those on the outside-dike side are the highest. All doors are otherwise heavily damaged and dilapidated. Both machine-made brick and IJsselsteen (Ijssel stone) have been used in the sluice. The latter points to a sluice core that is older in origin than the current appearance suggests. The machine-made brick is located especially on the outside and indicates a modernisation from around 1900. Hardstone blocks are incorporated at the corner points of the retaining walls. Several wrought-iron rod anchors are also incorporated in these walls. Wrought-iron rod anchors are also located in the masonry above the sluice culverts.

The Oud-Heusdensche sluice 1 has ensemble values owing to the particular significance of the object for the development of the water management of the region around the nationally important fortified city Heusden and owing to the historically spatial relationship with the existing waterways and the other two, likewise protected, small sluices in the Elshoutsedijk.
