Inleiding.
Het WINKEL-WOONHUIS werd gebouwd in 1893 in opdracht van en waarschijnlijk naar ontwerp van A. v.d. Bergh in Chaletstijl. Het hoekpand vormt met het tegenoverliggende hoekpand de duidelijk gemarkeerde entree van de Steenbergsestraat. Het pand is heden in gebruik als winkel met opslagruimte. De balustrade op de kroonlijst is verdwenen.
Omschrijving.
Het tweelaagse pand heeft een afgeschuinde hoek en is deels onderkelderd. De gevels zijn opgetrokken uit machinale baksteen en geleed door middel van speklagen. Op de samengestelde kap met twee afgewolfde steekkappen liggen oudhollandse- en opnieuw verbeterde hollandse dakpannen. De begane grond aan de westzijde, de Steenbergsestraat, bezit twee getoogde keldervensters in de hardstenen plint. Daar boven bevinden zich twee grote etalagevensters in een gedecoreerde houten winkelpui met kroonlijst. Deze is ook doorgetrokken boven de hoekingang met rond 1980 vernieuwde vleugeldeuren en een etalageraam aan de Noordsingel, de noordzijde. Hiernaast bevindt zich de paneeldeur van het vroegere woonhuis Noordsingel 2. Beide schuifvensters hiernaast zijn eveneens voorzien van getoogde boogtrommels met metselmozaïek. De getoogde bogen hebben hoek- en sluitstenen met diamantkoppen. Op de etage hierboven nogmaals twee vensters en een boven de etalage. Het deel boven de vensters wordt afgesloten door een steekkap met groot overstek met schijnspant met ajourwerk in Chaletstijl. In de uitsparing een segmentboog met twee kleine zolderramen. Op de afgechuinde hoek is er boven de ingang een balkon op consoles, onder een steekkapje op dunne houten stijlen. Het zinken kapje met spitspiron is voorzien van ajoursnijwerk. Het metselwerk is hier tot boven de dakrand doorgetrokken en wordt bekroond door een forse kroonlijst. Hieronder een segmentboogfries met mascaron. Boven de twee traveeën van de etalage aan de westzijde twee schuifvensters, zolderramen en een steekkap als aan de Noordsingel. Naast de etalageruiten bevindt zich een overbouwde segmentboogpoort waarboven één travee terugspringt, voorzien van een raam onder segmentboog en afgesloten door een kroonlijst met segmentboogfries. Het interieur is geheel vernieuwd.
Waardering.
Het pand is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorisch belang als voorbeeld van een sociaal-economische ontwikkeling, namelijk de totstandkoming van representatieve bedrijfsgebouwen kort voor 1900. Het is van belang voor de architectuurgeschiedenis, vanwege de bijzondere ornamentiek en de gaafheid van het exterieur. Het is door de ligging van bijzondere waarde voor het aanzien van de singelbebouwing, mede in relatie tot de structurele en visuele gaafheid van de stedelijke omgeving.

The SHOP-RESIDENTIAL HOUSE was built in 1893 commissioned by and probably designed by A. v.d. Bergh in Chalet style. The corner building forms with the opposite corner building the clearly marked entrance to the Steenbergsestraat. The building is currently in use as a shop with storage space. The balustrade on the cornice has disappeared.
Description.
The two-storey building has a bevelled corner and is partly cellared. The facades are built of machine-made brick and articulated by means of ashlar bands. On the composite roof with two arched roof insertions lie old Dutch and newly improved Dutch roof tiles. The ground floor on the west side, the Steenbergsestraat, has two arched cellar windows in the ashlar plinth. Above these are two large shop windows in a decorated wooden shop front with cornice. This is also extended above the corner entrance with glazed doors renewed around 1980 and a shop window on the Noordsingel, the north side. Next to this is the panel door of the former residential house Noordsingel 2. Both sash windows next to it also have arched arch rings with masonry mosaic. The arched arches have corner and keystone with diamond bosses. On the upper floor again two windows and one above the shop window. The part above the windows is closed by a roof insertion with large overhang with pseudo-rafter with fretwork in Chalet style. In the recess a segmental arch with two small attic windows. On the bevelled corner above the entrance is a balcony on consoles, under a small roof insertion on thin wooden posts. The zinc cap with pointed finial is fitted with fretwork carving. The masonry is extended here to above the roof edge and is crowned by a substantial cornice. Below this a segmental arch frieze with mask. Above the two bays of the shop window on the west side two sash windows, attic windows and a roof insertion as on the Noordsingel. Beside the shop window panes is a covered segmental arch gate above which one bay steps back, fitted with a window under segmental arch and closed by a cornice with segmental arch frieze. The interior has been completely renewed.
Valuation.
The building is of general importance. It has cultural-historical importance as an example of social-economic development, namely the establishment of representative commercial buildings shortly before 1900. It is important for architectural history, because of the special ornamental character and the integrity of the exterior. It is of particular value by its location for the appearance of the canal-side development, also in relation to the structural and visual integrity of the urban setting.
