Inleiding.
Het WOONHUIS is gebouwd in 1878 in Eclectische stijl naar ontwerp van architect C.P. van Genk. Terzijde van het deels vrijstaande huis bevindt zich muurwerk met poort uit de bouwtijd. Dit is het grootste pand aan de oneven zijde en correspondeert door de centrale plaats met het meest monumentale pand aan de overzijde, Stationsstraat 28.
Omschrijving.
Het twee-en-een-halflaagse pand telt vijf traveeën en is symmetrisch van opzet. Het pand is boven de hardstenen sokkel opgetrokken uit machinale baksteen met horizontale geleding door stuclijsten. Het platte dak heeft aan de voorzijde een schild met zwarte kruispannen. De getoogde stolpvensters en de deuromlijsting zijn voorzien van geprofileerde stucwerkomlijstingen met kuiven. De middelste travee is breder en bevat de entree met getoogd glas-in-loodbovenlicht. Daar boven verheft zich het balkon met smeedijzeren balustrade en vlaggestokhouder, op voluutconsoles met leeuwekoppen. De balkondeuren worden omlijst door dubbele lisenen van pleisterwerk, overgaand in een lijst met dubbele voluutconsoles rondom een getoogd zolderraam met kuif en sierpleisterwerk. Dit raam wordt bekroond door een gebroken driehoekig fronton met stekelpiron. De getoogde tweelichts mezzaninoraampjes hebben elk aan weerskanten een voluutconsole, die de kroonlijst draagt. Deze is voorzien van een tandlijst. Rechts van het pand bevindt zich een muur van machinale baksteen met hardstenen plint en sierpleisterwerk geleding. In het midden is een getoogde poort geplaatst met een diamantkop als sluitsteen. De rechter zijgevel is zeer sober en vrijwel blind van opzet. De achtergevel is oorspronkelijk en deels aan het oog onttrokken door recente aanbouwen.
Het interieur herbergt een tochtportaal met wit marmeren vloer en een hal met visgraatparket. De lambrizering is van bruin/grijs marmer. De plafonds op de begane grond en de etage zijn voorzien van gestucte ruitmotieven. De bordestrap heeft op de hoofdbaluster een glas-in-lood lantaarntje. De trap wordt verlicht door een groot glas-in-lood raam met in medaillon een afbeelding van de "Gevangenpoort" te Bergen op Zoom.
Waardering.
Het woonhuis is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als beeldbepalend onderdeel van de stadsuitleg uit het laatste kwart van de 19de eeuw en de relatie die het heeft tot de ontwikkeling en uitbreiding van de stad, het is van belang voor de ontwikkeling van de typologie van het stedelijk woonhuis in de 19de eeuw. The DWELLING HOUSE was built in 1878 in Eclectic style to the design of architect C.P. van Genk. Adjacent to the partly detached house is brickwork with a gate from the building period. The two-and-a-half-storey building comprises five bays and is symmetrical in layout. The building is constructed above the hardstone plinth from machine-made brick with horizontal articulation by stucco mouldings. The flat roof has a hipped section on the front with black cross tiles. The arched mullioned windows and the door surround are provided with moulded stucco surrounds with pediments. The middle bay is wider and contains the entrance with arched leaded-glass fanlight. Above this rises the balcony with wrought-iron balustrade and flagpole holder, on volute consoles with lion heads. The balcony doors are framed by double pilasters of plasterwork, continuing into a moulding with double volute consoles around an arched attic window with pediment and ornamental plasterwork. This window is crowned by a broken triangular pediment with a finial. The arched two-light mezzanine window openings each have a volute console on either side, which supports the cornice. This is provided with a dentil moulding. To the right of the building is a wall of machine-made brick with hardstone plinth and ornamental plasterwork articulation. In the centre is an arched gate placed with a diamond-shaped keystroke. The right side facade is very austere and virtually devoid of openings. The rear facade is original and partly obscured by recent additions.
The interior contains a draught vestibule with white marble floor and a hall with herringbone parquet. The wainscoting is of brown/grey marble. The ceilings on the ground floor and the storey are provided with stuccoed trellis motifs. The staircase has a leaded-glass lantern on the main newel. The staircase is lit by a large leaded-glass window with a medallion containing an image of the "Gevangenpoort" at Bergen op Zoom.
