Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
The RESIDENTIAL HOUSE was built in Eclectic style in 1879 to a design from 1873 by architect C.P. van Genk, commissioned by and as a residence for manufacturer A. Asselbergs. It was extended at the rear around 1910. It is the middle and largest building of the row and projects forward relative to the adjacent houses. The building is currently in use as a cantonal court.
Description.
The two-storey symmetrical building comprises five bays and is placed under a hipped roof with black newly improved Dutch tiles and roof dormers. The plastered facade is articulated horizontally by narrow moulded lines and vertically by wide corner pilasters with fields and a slightly projecting central bay, which is rusticated. The plinth is of stone. The T-windows on the ground floor have a round-arched closure, provided with a stuccoed moulded frame and wide hood-moulds with portrait heads. The T-windows on the first floor are arched and have a different hood-mould finish with portrait heads. The central bay contains the entrance with a panelled door with round-arched fanlight. Wrought ironwork is incorporated here showing a sun with the text "sol iustitiae illustra nos". Above this is a heavy carved stone balcony on volute consoles. Ornamental vases stand at the corner points of the balcony. The frieze contains fields and volute consoles. The moulded cornice rests on blocks. In the centre above is a roof dormer with round-arched window and triangular closure. The roof dormers on either side are renewed.
The pavement in front of the building is marked off by simple stone bollards. Internally the house is divided by a broad central corridor with white marble floor. The draught vestibule is closed by double doors with small glazing bars and worked copper handles. The walls are articulated by pilasters with Corinthian capitals. The shafts are provided with helmeted female heads and inset floral motifs. Between the pilasters are ornamental fields with corner rosettes. The ceilings have broad stucco edge decorations and large stucco rosettes, some of which are provided with female heads. To the left of the entrance are two rooms opened through for the enlargement of the courtroom. The stucco rosettes in the centre of both ceilings and the broad edges with inter alia grapes and tendrils correspond to those in the hall. Many windows still possess the worked metal Spanish window closures. Behind this is a smaller space adjoining the garden. A roof light, resting on blocks, illuminates the room from above. To the right of the entrance is a room with dark oak wainscoting and a fireplace of the same material. This Neo-Renaissance fireplace is provided with banding and scrollwork, vases, a superstructure, side cabinets and green marble surround. A narrow corridor in the corner connects this room with the one behind it. On the corridor side is the curved staircase to the floor above. The back room also has a wooden fireplace in which a cast-iron stove from the De Schelde factory in Bergen op Zoom, number 13, is placed. Behind this are old Delft blue tiles and an antique tile tableau, depicting fishing. The room ends with two semi-circular glazed corners, each containing a pane with a sailing ship. Behind this room is a section, possibly built around 1910. The flooring consists of green and beige tiles with geometric motif. In the corner stands a broad marble washbasin on slender legs. On either side of the back room is a lavatory with marble wainscoting. A Moorish arch provides access to a vestibule with French doors adjoining the garden. The ceiling of this is provided with a stucco rosette in Neo-Empire style, with vases, ribbons, narrow festoons and torches. The staircase is lit by a large roof light with white glass. The landing is provided with the same decoration as on the ground floor. The rooms on the first floor are simplified. The attic has a roof truss structure with bowed rafters.
Valuation.
The residential house is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as a characterizing element of the urban layout from the last quarter of the 19th century and the relationship it has to the development and expansion of the city; it is of importance for the development of the typology of the 19th-century urban dwelling. The building has architectural-historical value because of its balanced and careful composition and is of importance for the work of architect Van Genk. It is of particular significance for the appearance of the city and is also of importance because of the integrity of its exterior. Because the designs of the development on Stationsstraat remained in one hand, there is a question of architectural-historical rarity.
