Inleiding.

Introduction.

The ALGEMEEN BURGER GASTHUIS was built in 1880-1881 on behalf of the board of regents of the Algemeen Burger Gasthuis. It was built in Neo-Romanesque style according to the design of architect C.P. van Genk. It was one of his first major commissions and also one of his principal works. The associated chapel at the rear was demolished in later extensions. The interior of the building, which now serves as a nursing home, has been simplified and is therefore of minor cultural-historical value.

Description.

The two-storey block has a U-shaped ground plan with a central risalit with a gabled top and comprises a total of seventeen bays. The side wings and the central risalit each account for three of these. The side wings are covered by a hipped roof, the central section and gable top by a gabled roof with black Romanesque roof tiles. The underpinned building is constructed of machine-made brick on a sandstone plinth and has window sills with stops under the six-pane round-arch windows. With yellow and light-red brick accents are placed around the arches. The facades are articulated horizontally by a whitened cord moulding with double sawtooth moulding and a band at the height of the window sills. The round arch of the entrance section is supported by two small columns with cube capitals. In the whitened arch connecting the columns the name "Algemeen Burger Gasthuis" is inscribed. Above the entrance is a double sawtooth moulding and the sandstone cord moulding is bent in the form of the round arch. The entrance lies further back in a portal with barrel vault. The double door is furnished with cushions, rosettes, a letter box and door knobs with decorations. The fanlight is Romanesque in style. In the section of the gable top above the cord moulding the risalit displays a high central round-arch niche within round-arch niches around the paired windows of the first floor and attic. The middle window is furnished with an oculus and a cube capital. The windows of the entrance and side wing are placed in a niche with whitened block and arch decoration, the remaining windows do not have this treatment. The moulded cornice rests on corbels. This form is also continued in the central gable top. It is crowned by an openwork three-quarter circle with the date 1881. The side facades have five bays and are sober in design. First two blocked round-arch windows with ornamental cornice. At the last three bays the arched six- and four-pane sash windows have an arched closure. The rear facade is undecorated and partly plastered. The windows are partly altered and reduced in size there. The interior contains a draught vestibule with a small round plaster rosette. The structure of the building on the ground floor is still partially recognizable. Special elements of the building are two historic staircases and the furnishings of the regents' chamber (coming from the ground floor).

Valuation.

The building is of general interest. It has cultural-historical value as an example of a social and spiritual development and is also of interest as an example of the typological development of institutions. The Neo-Romanesque building is important for architectural history and in the oeuvre of architect Van Genk. It is important because of the ornamental work and for the appearance of the city. The building is important because of the integrity of its exterior and in relation to the structural and visual integrity of the urban environment. The former hospital is important because of its architectural-historical, functional and typological rarity.
