Inleiding.

Introduction.

R.K. CHURCH St. Quirinus, no. 53, built after a design by architect J.Th.J. Cuijpers in 1911 in a Neo-Romanesque style. The whole was executed by contractor M. Bakkeren from Princenhage. Church and presbytery lie elevated, set back from the street.

Description.

Three-aisled cruciform church with a short nave and transept under mansard roofs. The nave comprises three bays with a front structure with stepped gable, flanked by square towers with curved spires, a transept with crossing tower under tent roof with square bell tower, crowned by a spire. A choir bay with 7/10 closed choir. The side aisles are interrupted by the transept and each have a hipped roof with cresting, perpendicular to the central nave. Against the left gable, behind the transept a round turret with spire. On either side of the front facade small chapels. At the rear around the choir a single-storey ambulatory under lean-to roof on either side of which rectangular single-storey building masses under mansard roofs. The whole is executed in brick and has beneath the eaves a dentil frieze. Below that a broad plastered band down to the rounded arches of the windows. Roofs are covered with slate, the stepped gable at the rear is boarded and fitted with a weathervane. The entrance, a double door, lies in a stepped-back roundarch portico. Above it a large curved canopy with moulded edge and hanging woodwork with carved edge. Above the door in the arch spandrel is a natural stone polychrome relief with a representation of Saint Quirinus with kneeling figures on either side and the inscription: "PETITE ET DABITUR VOBIS" and "HEILIGE QUIRINUS BID VOOR ONS". Above the entrance section five narrow round-arch windows and three niches in the stepped gable with sculptures of Christ, flanked by angels on corbels, beneath canopies.

All round-arch windows are filled with stained glass. In the roof plane small roof chapels with hipped roof and cresting. The central nave has a wooden barrel vault, painted with bands with geometric floral motifs. The narrow side aisles and the transept are furnished with brick cross vaults. The elevation is divided in two, above the supporting arches on square piers a clerestory with three coupled round-arch windows. In the choir ambulatory five niches with stone small vaults. The church is undercrofted at the rear beneath the former sacristy and candle chamber (now in use as sacristy). Parts of the original fittings such as fixed cupboards have been preserved. Mural paintings are present in the choir, of the original polychromy of the nave almost everything has disappeared except for a small patch. Further of importance among others: an oak organ gallery from 1643 and organ case by Jan Colijns de Nole from Antwerp, in the form of a moulded and carved architrave on four fluted Tuscan columns with three arches; shells and festoons in the arch spandrels, from the old church. Wooden altarpiece retable 18th century. Copper baptismal font, excavated at the old church in 1920: Mechelen Renaissance work from 1549; bowl on baluster foot, the lid crowned by a St. Martin group. The whole 2.10 metres high. Accompanying copper plate with text in gothic minuscules in which the foundation is commemorated: a gift as atonement for a murder.

Valuation.

The church is of general importance. It has cultural-historical significance as an expression of the development of Catholicism in the early twentieth century and as an example of the typological development of church architecture after the Neo-Gothic. The whole is of architectural-historical importance due to material use and ornamentation and holds an important place in the oeuvre of the architect, particularly because of the Neo-Romanesque design as a consciously pursued break with the Neo-Gothic. Due to the striking setting, connected with the development of the location the complex has ensemble value. The whole has been well preserved.
