Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
Former TOWN HALL with PRISON that nowadays serves as day care for the disabled and as accommodation for the local history society. The building is a merger of several older buildings such as an inn, a butcher's shop and a patronage. Architecturally the most interesting is the projecting structure dating from 1921, strikingly designed, with a rusticated plinth and open-work tower, which was built in forms of the Transitional Architecture. The function of town hall was maintained until 1939. The conservatory added in 1996 falls outside the protection provided by the national heritage authorities.
Description.
The entirely detached building consists of a number of building volumes dating from different periods and differing in form and roof type. The main mass is rectangular in form with the length axis parallel to the road, has two storeys and a mansard roof covered with black Roman tiles and Romanesque tiles. At the rear there are four adjoining building structures under flat roofs, a gabled roof and a lean-to roof. Also the front section built on in 1921, one and two storeys, which largely determines the appearance of the building, is complex in plan and has various roof forms and coverings including slates. Separated from the main mass by a passage, there is on the right side on a rectangular ground plan a single-storey prison under a flat roof with two separate cells inside. The front section consists of three separate parts and has a granito plinth of rusticated and polygonal masonry. The masonry above is of brickwork laid in chain bond. The left section has two storeys with: a small gable with date, straight closed windows with granito and sandstone trims and sandstone sills and in the small gable a semi-circular small window with ornamental granito trim; the roof tiles on the sides of this are covered with slates; this section has a roof perpendicular to the road which is a flat roof with the hips covered with tiles and slates. Central in the facade is a strikingly designed small tower with: an entrance with a sandstone step, a double door with semi-circular arched fanlight, a balcony with simple iron railing, straight closed door and above it a framed shield containing the municipal coat of arms. Above this a conical, two-storey tower top with moulding and oculi with diamond-head trim. The upper tower section is open-worked and is crowned with a four-sided pediment with decoration. The right section of the facade has a rectangular ground plan and a flat roof. The large double window is identical to that in the left section. Striking is the breastwork of open-work ornamental brickwork. The side facade of the main mass of the building, covered with a mansard roof, has slightly arched windows on the ground floor and straight closed windows on the upper storey. The frames have been replaced. In the gable walls there are various wall anchors. On the roof corners brick chimneys are placed. The extensions at the rear consist of an old section with a stepped gable and a gabled roof covered with curved tiles. At the rear of this section there is still a straight closed wooden loft hatch. On the right side of the building and connected to it via a wall with lattice fencing is a single-storey prison with two cells. The front section of the street side serves as a garage and has a large, straight closed, double wooden clamped door.
Internally little of the original ornamentation has been preserved.
