Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
In 1909 construction began on the DOCTOR'S RESIDENCE for the doctor/pharmacy of J. Blom. The design was by Amsterdam architect Lippits who employed forms related to Transitional Architecture. Today the building is still in use as an apothecary's residence. The single-storey extension at the rear under a flat roof falls outside the protection under national law.
Description.
The entirely detached building is clearly set back from the road and is surrounded by spacious gardens on both the front and rear sides. The ground plan is roughly rectangular, although there are two segment-arch bays on the front side and extensions on the left side and at the rear. The length-axis of the building runs parallel to the road. The main body of the building consists of two storeys; the walls are constructed of fine masonry of machine-made brick in running bond, the hipped roof is covered with red glazed tuile-du-Nord tiles. In the roof slopes on the sides there are two high brick chimneys. The front gable is symmetrically arranged and has a centrally located entrance bay which breaks through the gutter-line on alternating knobs and is crowned with a segment-arch pediment containing a polychrome tile tableau with Aesculapius. The entrance is richly ornamented. The panelled door is accessible via a stone staircase. The door is as it were framed by a slightly arched window with glazing bars and with geometrically patterned stained glass. Striking is the iron bell-pull. Both bays adjacent to the entrance each have a segment-arch bay with a large, right-angled, window-section, a gutter-line on knobs, a balcony with stone posts with stone coping and timber railings between and glazed balcony doors. On the left side there is still the original surgery entrance under a sloping roof. At right-angles to the main body is a slightly lower rectangular section under a tile-covered gabled roof and with a gutter on timber knobs. The rear side of this section has a glass-framed door which is further flanked by two high brick chimneys. At the rear of this is a single-storey extension under a flat roof. This extension probably dates from the nineteen-seventies. Internally the building contains, particularly in the front section, elements of the original ornamentation, including stained-glass windows with medical imagery in the hall door and timber panelling and staircase. The building is surrounded by both a large front and rear garden. The front garden is bounded by wrought-iron ornamental railings from the construction period.
Valuation.
The building is of general importance.
The building has cultural-historical significance as a special expression of the socio-economic and typological development of the doctor-apothecary residence. The building has architectural-historical significance because of the special coherence between exterior and interior and because of the applied ornamentation and style elements. The building is of significance because of the high quality of the constituent components.
