Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
The partially detached PARSONAGE with garden was erected in 1926 and 1927 on the foundations of a predecessor in Traditionalist forms on behalf of the Roman Catholic church council of the Heilige Maria Magdalena parish by architect A.W. Oomen from Oosterhout and is still in use as such today.
Description.
The partially detached and partially cellaried building is constructed on a square ground plan and has a smaller, rectangular extension at the rear. At the front there is a shallow garden across the full width of the building. This is surrounded by iron railings with geometric ornamental motifs from the construction period between two brick pilasters with natural stone coping. At the rear there is a lower, partly walled, deep garden, which extends to the adjoining churchyard. On the north side there is a small square to which the parish church is built. The main mass of the building spans five bays and has two storeys. The building has a flat roof with roof slopes covered with slate in Dutch bond. The front facade has a tall ashlar plinth which extends to the sills of the windows. The remainder of the facade is constructed of machine-made brick, laid in cross-bond that is cut and jointed. All windows are square-headed and have single-glazed sash windows and leaded glass with geometric motifs in the fanlights. The large windows have built-in roller shutters. Above the windows there is a natural stone lintel with a course of brick above it. Striking is the profuse use of natural stone in the front facade. Besides the plinth, ashlar has also been used for the window sills, the steps and the lower part of the entrance portico. In the section above the plinth zone, a lighter type of natural stone (possibly sandstone) has been used, among other things in the lintels and corner reinforcement blocks above the windows and the square decorative blocks decorated with rosettes. These blocks also appear again in the frieze beneath the cornice with slight overhang resting on stepped consoles.
Below this is a profiled drip moulding. The entrance section with balcony above is given an impressive and finely detailed design. This is evident, among other things, from the elegant iron door bell on the right side. Three square and one rectangular window with leaded glass with geometric motifs provide light. The entrance is formed by a double door arranged on the right side with ornate panels with relief carved woodwork. Each of the two door leaves has a round small window with twisted decorative ironwork grilles in front. The natural stone surround of the windows and doors is decorated with, among other things, a roll moulding, mouldings and rosettes. The rectangular balcony rests on four worked consoles, of which the two outer ones are stepped and the two inner ones grooved. The balcony is bounded by worked natural stone pillars beneath a coping moulding. Between these pillars is an iron railing with geometric motifs. In the front roof slope a rectangular window with opening sash has recently been placed. On the corners of the flat roof there are two substantial brick chimney stacks. A striking detail is the rectangular diagonal corner bay which is located on the church side and has two storeys, although the upper one is slightly lower than the corresponding storey of the main mass. The side facades are in layout almost identical to the front facade, although the detailing here is more restrained. For example, no ashlar has been used in the plinth and the windows have no leaded glass in the fanlights. The plinth, which has the same height as that of the front facade, consists here of a slightly darker brick which is separated from the section above by a roll course.
The side facade on the south side is largely concealed from view because a building was placed against it in the nineteen-nineties of the 20th century. At the rear of the main mass (and thereby also designed and built at the same time) there is a single-storey extension on a rectangular ground plan beneath a flat roof with roof slopes, covered with interlocking tiles. Brickwork and windows are in accordance with the main mass. The general detailing is, however, kept even more restrained. The entrance has a panelled door with carved fanlight. In the roof slope on the church side there is a dormer window. Internally the building is decorated with, among other things, much leaded glass. Furthermore, some of the ceilings are stuccoed in restrained, strictly geometric motifs. Also striking is the monumental staircase with ornamented wooden banisters and balustrade.
In the large cellar there is still a brick round well which probably belonged to the old parsonage which was on the same site as the present one. When the parsonage was rebuilt in 1926 and 1927, use was probably made of the existing foundations and well.
Valuation.
The parsonage is of general importance. The parsonage has cultural-historical value as a special expression of cultural and spiritual developments. The parsonage has architectural-historical value because of the applied style elements and the high quality of the rich ornamentation. Furthermore, the parsonage is of importance as a special expression of the typological development of the village parsonage.
The parsonage has been well preserved.
