Omschrijving
Inleiding.
Waardering.

Description
Introduction.
A completely detached double dwelling house, located at the corner of Hoofdstraat/Pastoor Gillisstraat, which was designed and built as such in 1919-1920 on commission of the Brouwers brothers in forms of Interbellum architecture. Nowadays it also serves partly as a commercial property and catering business.
Description.
The main mass of the double dwelling house has a rectangular ground plan with the longitudinal axis parallel to the street, and two virtually perpendicular single-storey extensions at the corners of the rear side. The entirety, symmetrically constructed building consists of six bays of each two storeys, built in machine-made brickwork, laid in cross bond. The main mass has a flat roof with hipped ends covered with red shingles. The windows in the roof hips are later additions and fall outside the protection. In the middle of the roof, at the division between the two dwelling houses, there is a brick shared chimney.
The front facade on the Hoofdstraat side is the most imposing. In it the twofold division of the house is clearly expressed. Each of the two dwelling houses consists of three sections: on the outside a corner bay with a 3/8ths closure, then a narrow entrance bay and towards the centre of the building a bay with a truncated gable. The corner bays and gables each possess a composite roof crowned by a finial. The building has a continuous and stepping-back-with-the-facade profiled wooden drip moulding that rests on consoles. Both gables are each ornamented with three diamond-shaped blocks of decorative brickwork. The articulation in both gables is further reinforced by the inner parts of the brickwork being set slightly back. The windows on the ground floor are all straight-shuttered, have continuous stone lintels and are arched over with a segmental arch. Furthermore, the windows have sash frames with fanlights with glazing bars and built-in roller shutters. The entrances are set slightly back and each have a stone step, winged door with iron decorative grille, an overhanging profiled cornice and a rectangular fanlight with geometric glazing bars. The bays have on the first floor a balcony loggia with open-worked brick balustrade with stone coping. Door and windows are straight-shuttered and have leaded glass in the fanlights. The three first-floor windows in each of the gables are oblong in form and arched over with semicircular arches. At the top of each gable there are still two small square little windows. In the front facade there are furthermore, above both entrances, two natural stone facade stones with the inscription ANNO MCMXX. Also above each entrance there is an iron flag holder. At the entrance of number 23 there is a terracotta icon tile with an image of Mary with child. At the front of the building, between low brick bollards with stone coping plates, decorative iron fencing with simple geometric motifs has been installed. Both side facades roughly correspond in terms of material use and detailing with the front facade. All facade openings are straight-shuttered. The windows have stone lintels. In the side facade on Pastoor Gillisstraat, two windows with frames have recently been installed on the left of the entrance, which, although well detailed, fall outside the protection.
This also applies to the roof windows and dormer window.
Virtually perpendicular placed at the corners of the rear side of the main mass are two narrow single-storey extensions under a flat roof. These enclose as it were an interior courtyard that passes into the garden. In the rear facade of the main mass on the garden side there are among other things two large semicircular arch windows with frames with glazing bars. In the interior of number 23 various elements have been preserved such as the wooden wall panelling and the staircase with ornamented handrail and balustrade. Some of the ceilings have a sober, strictly geometric, grooved decoration. In the interior of number 25 no noteworthy authentic elements have been preserved.
Valuation.
The building is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical importance as a particular expression of a socio-economic development. The building has architectural-historical importance as a particular expression of the coupled dwelling house and because of the applied sober style elements. The building is of importance because of the architectural integrity of exterior and interior.
