Inleiding.
Aan de westzijde van de Hoofdstraat, gelegen op het smalle, langgerekte terrein van een uit ca. 1870 daterende school en met gebruikmaking van onder andere het bestaande hoofdgebouw, werd in de jaren dertig van deze eeuw de in Traditionele vormen opgezette LEERFABRIEK C. en A. van Gorp gevestigd. In de jaren dertig en de daarop volgende decennia, werden hieraan steeds nieuwe bouwblokken toegevoegd, waardoor het voor leerfabrieken zo karakteristieke geheel van samengevoegde rechthoekige bouwvolumes ontstond. De fabriek bezit verder een markante gemetselde schoorsteen. Het kantoor/magazijn aan de straatzijde dateert uit 1948/49 en valt buiten de van rijkswege geldende bescherming. De fabriek is sinds 1 januari 1996 gesloten en wordt gedeeltelijk verhuurd als opslagruimte.
Omschrijving.
Het langgerekte gebouwencomplex bestaat uit een kantoor/magazijn met verschillende daarachter gelegen productiehallen en aanbouwen. Aan de straatzijde bevindt zich het uit 1948/49 daterende kantoor/magazijn. Dit is een tweelaags bouwvolume op rechthoekige grondslag met gevels in schoon metselwerk onder een plat dak. Machinale baksteen. Diverse recht gesloten vensters met stalen ramen en roedenverdeling, bij kantoor van deels gematteerd glas met de initialen van de eigenaars. Paneeldeur in portiek. Inrijpoort onder grote betonnen luifel. Gewelfde gootlijst. Siermuur onder ezelsrug met afgerond einde waarop een sierijzeren vlaggenstokhouder. Achter het kantoor/magazijngedeelte bevindt zich het uit ca. 1870 daterende voormalige schoolgebouw. Toen de leerfabriek nog in bedrijf was, was hier op de begane grond de walskamer gevestigd, de verdiepingen werden gebruikt voor opslag en het drogen van huiden. Het is een drielaags gebouw op rechthoekige grondslag met gepleisterde gevels onder een plat dak. De vensters zijn licht getoogd en hebben openslaande twintigruits ramen. De vensterpartijen zijn iets terugliggend in de gevel geplaatst. De bovenzijde van de twee centrale traveeën is verhoogd en heeft een kleine tandlijst met daaronder de geschilderde tekst: C. & A. van GORP - LEDERFABRIEK -. Achter dit gebouw bevindt zich het voormalige kuipenterrein en de looierij. Dit grote, uit 1934 en 1939 daterende, gebouw heeft drie bouwlagen met gevels in schoon metselwerk onder een plat dak. De vensters zijn licht getoogd en hebben ramen met roedenverdeling. Diverse getoogde hijsluiken. Het gebouw is aan de achterzijde voorzien van gemetselde lisenen. Tegen dit gedeelte zijn een uit 1946 daterende drielaags aanbouw onder een plat dak en een éénlaags ketelhuis met een lessenaarsdak uit ca. 1900 geplaatst. Aan de westzijde van dit ketelhuis is de hoge, gemetselde schoorsteen geplaatst. Deze is bekleed met ijzeren banden. Achter de voormalige looierij bevindt zich nog een uit ca. 1900 daterend bedrijfsgedeelte van één bouwlaag met gevels in schoon metselwerk onder een plat dak. De vensters zijn licht getoogd en hebben ramen met een roedenverdeling. Aan de achterzijde hiervan bevinden zich het voormalige nathuis en de kalkerij. Dit gebouw gaat aan de achterzijde over in een uit 1934 daterend tweelaags bedrijfsgebouw op rechthoekige grondslag met gevels in schoon metselwerk onder een plat dak. De vensters zijn licht getoogd en hebben ramen met een roedenverdeling. De ramen op de begane grond hebben een afwijkend bovenlicht en zijn hergebruikt en afkomstig van het schoolgedeelte. Losstaand van het fabriekscomplex ligt iets zuiden van het voormalige ketelhuis een gebouw met grote looikuipen die tot waterzuiveringsinstallatie zijn omgebouwd. De fabrieksinventaris is op enkele machines na, waaronder een walsmachine en een heteluchtinstallatie, verwijderd.
Waardering.
De leerfabriek is van algemeen belang. De leerfabriek heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van de sociaal-economische en een typologische ontwikkeling van de leerindustrie in de Langstraat.
