Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
About 500 metres east of the Putseweg at the end of a long drive stands the former VILLA of the Antwerp timber merchant Servais. The building from 1883 in Neo-Romanesque style with castle-like elements and motifs of the Romanesque Revival style, is situated in the originally partly park-like setting of the Bieduinen estate. This consists mainly of productive forests of coniferous wood, laid out on a sandy drift and heathland complex. The original function ceased after the Second World War. The property has been renovated and extended more than once. In the process, a single-storey extension was placed against the tower and the west gable, while the southern roof slope was provided with a substantial roof dormer.
Description.
The building has a rectangular ground plan and comprises two storeys and partly a roof space. It is covered by a mansard roof with slates in Maasdekking and partly by a flat roof. It is built of brick and has rich natural stone decoration including hard stone sills and lintels.
The southern and western gables are more richly detailed than the northern and eastern ones. Against the three-storey western gable, which is horizontally articulated by a sill strip and an arch frieze, stands a substantial octagonal tower of three storeys, whose masonry is provided with cemented bands and cornice strips. In addition to four six-pane windows, the tower has vertical blind arrow slits.
These castle-like elements are continued in the gable crest with two square corner turrets topped with spirelets. The gable, which adjoins the tower, is crenellated and has a rising arch frieze. On the first floor to the left and right of the tower a six-pane sash window, in the roof space two Romanesque arch windows with small glazing bars. On the ground floor the tower is incorporated in a single-storey extension under a flat roof from about 1950. This now contains the main entrance.
The two-storey southern gable has an irregular layout with on the ground floor a door with side lights under an iron lintel with rosettes and to the right a door with two-part fanlight with on both sides a pair of six-pane sash windows. On the first floor a corresponding layout, with six six-pane sash windows. The gable is closed by a Romanesque arch frieze, above which a gutter strip and three brick roof dormers with stepped gables, in which Romanesque arch windows with casement windows with small glazing bars. Below the middle roof dormer against the gable on a console a limestone statue of Joseph with child under a canopy. To the left and right of the iron lintel a pair of brick pilasters, with hard stone capping, on which three intersecting circles. The plain two-storey north gable has six-pane sash windows, some of which on the ground floor are enlarged or blocked. This part of the house has a flat roof. In the mansard roof here three wooden roof dormers. In the eastern gable, which on the ground floor is hidden behind an extension, is in the roof space a door with arched fanlight and a sash window. In the gable between two chimneys a light opening.
Assessment.
The villa is of general importance. The house has cultural-historical significance as a particular expression of socio-economic development, namely the reclamation and exploitation of wasteland in the 19th century, and is also of importance as an example of the typological development of the castle-like villa. The object is of architectural-historical significance through its style and detailing, which in the mixture of materials and castle-like motifs reveal a Belgian influence. The house is of importance because of the architectural integrity of its exterior. It is of importance because of its architectural-historical, constructional and typological rarity.
