Inleiding
- als bijzondere uitdrukking van de sociaal-economische ontwikkeling, namelijk de opkomst en bloei van de kaashandel en de opkomst van de zuivelfabrieken in het weidegebied van Friesland;
- als bijzonder voorbeeld van een typologische ontwikkeling van een woonhuis in combinatie met een pakhuis, specifiek voor de kaashandel;
- vanwege de bijzondere samenhang tussen exterieur en interieur;
- vanwege de historisch-ruimtelijke relatie van het woonhuis met land- en waterwegen, in het bijzonder door de ligging bij de loskade aan de Bolswardertrekvaart;
- vanwege de eenvoudige maar verzorgde detaillering van zowel het exterieur als het interieur;

Description
Introduction
The DWELLING HOUSE for a cheese merchant was, according to the commemorative stone in the west gable, built in 1871. It is possible that the layer of the first stone, W.E. Struiksma, was also the client. The architect-contractor of the cheese merchant's house, constructed in the Craftsman-traditional building style, is not known.
Wommels had twelve cheese merchant houses in the third quarter of the 19th century, which by their characteristic architecture (a dwelling house with a low upper storey with small windows) were a striking feature in the villages of the Frisian pasture region. The buildings formed a combination of dwelling house and warehouse: the residential part below and the warehouse above. Usually the cheese merchant houses, and De Terp 20 confirms this picture, were situated on waterways, namely the Bolswardertrekvaart. Due to increased scale, these houses have lost their original function.
On the front side (Bolswardertrekvaart side) the building stands well back on the plot; on the rear side it stands closely against the compact built-up area around the village terp, separated from it by an alley (glop). The cheese merchant house was restored in 1998 and is in use as a dwelling. The modifications include among other things the installation of new bargeboards on the chimneys, the installation of modern roof windows in the side and rear slopes and the replacement of the characteristic half-windows with shutters on the cheese loft by complete window frames with sash windows. The colour scheme in the dwelling, the marbling work with stencilling in the hallway, the chamfered doors, the tones in the side room, in the box beds and the walk-through cupboard are largely original.
Description
The main volume of the dwelling house has a rectangular floor plan and is positioned with the long (front) gable oriented towards the Bolswardertrekvaart.
The building consists of one storey and a roof storey with a high breast wall (a half storey) beneath the hipped roof; the lean-to extension on the rear side beneath a half-hipped roof extends only to the first storey. The building is constructed of brown brick and is scarcely decorated: the windows of the cheese loft are somewhat enhanced by courses of yellow brick and some relief work in the brown brick. It is covered by a hipped roof with black glazed Tuile de Nord tiles on the front and side slopes and black smoked Dutch tiles on the rear slope; the lean-to roof on the rear is covered with red unglazed Dutch tiles. On both corners a chimney.
In the front gable an arched two-light window, a panelled door as imitation porte brisée with central mullion, and in the fanlight a cast-iron tree of life and corner ornaments and two arched H-windows. On the wall course between the door and an H-window a sandstone commemorative stone is set in with the inscription: THE FIRST STONE LAID BY W.E. STRUIKSMA, ON 31 MARCH 1871. To the right of the door a (damaged) brick with the carved initials: W.E.S.
In the second storey, on both the front and the rear, and regularly distributed across the gable, four semicircular cast-iron windows with tracery.
The north gable has one six-paned window; on the upper storey two semicircular cast-iron windows with tracery. In the extension a four-paned window. The southern side gable has a shutter to the cheese loft on the south-west corner and two semicircular cast-iron windows with tracery. In the extension a door with neo-renaissance decoration and an eight-paned side light. In the rear gable are among other things a small shutter and a back entrance with an upper and lower door. On the corner two carved bricks with the initials F.E.M. and E.().S.
The INTERIOR of the dwelling house with cheese loft is in its original state. The original elements include among other things the L-shaped hallway, the marbled and stencilled-border wainscoting, a loose ladder and fixed staircase to the cheese loft and the rooms on either side of the hallway with original doors and beam ceilings: a sitting room with marbled wooden fireplace mantel (originally with fireplace surround), box beds on either side of a walk-through cupboard; a side room with cupboard wall and two box beds, one of which above a small storage cellar; a kitchen floored with terrazzo. All cupboards and box beds still have the original crescent-shaped, palm-wood handles and swivels.
Valuation
The dwelling house for a cheese merchant from 1871 in traditional-craftsman building style is of general cultural-historical and architectural-historical importance:
- as a particular expression of socio-economic development, namely the rise and flourishing of the cheese trade and the emergence of dairy factories in the pasture region of Friesland;
- as a particular example of a typological development of a dwelling house in combination with a warehouse, specifically for the cheese trade;
- because of the particular coherence between exterior and interior;
- because of the historical-spatial relationship of the dwelling house with land and waterways, in particular through its location at the loading dock on the Bolswardertrekvaart;
- because of the simple but careful detailing of both the exterior and the interior;
- because of the high degree of integrity of the exterior and interior of the cheese merchant house.
