Inleiding

- als bijzondere uitdrukking van de sociaal-economische ontwikkeling, namelijk de opkomst en bloei van de kaashandel in het weidegebied van Friesland;

- als architectonische vertaling van de bloei van de kaashandel door de functiewijzigingen die het woonhuis heeft ondergaan;

- vanwege de bijzondere ornamentiek van het woonhuis;

- als hoofdobject van een historisch gegroeid complex dat is verbonden met de kaashandel;

- vanwege de historisch-ruimtelijke relatie van het woonhuis met land- en waterwegen, in het bijzonder door de ligging bij de loskade;

Introduction

The appearance of the DWELLING HOUSE, belonging to the cheese warehouse, dates largely from the period 1890-1905. The house is built in a Craftsman-traditional building style enlivened with 'plasterwork-Eclecticism'. The renovation of the dwelling was perhaps carried out by village carpenter Durk Wijma: in doing so the facades and the roof form were altered. The main structure of the building, consisting of a corridor along the north facade, to which the various rooms are attached, is probably older. Presumably the stucco conceals the alterations to the facades. The building was originally built as a cheese merchant's dwelling; last inhabited as such by Leendert Feitsma: the living quarters were below; the cheese loft above. The earliest date (1890) of the renovation is determined by the construction of a warehouse behind (to the east of) the dwelling, not protected as a national monument due to insufficient historical significance, presumably around 1890. The construction of the adjacent warehouse, which is protected as a national monument (1905), is the latest year in which the dwelling could have been renovated.

The dwelling formerly stood at the edge of the village in a strategic location, namely at the intersection of two traffic routes: the Bolswardertrekvaart and an access road from the village in a westerly direction. At the Bolswardertrekvaart is a concrete quay with a concrete bollard.

The southern side facade and the rear facade have been altered and are of subordinate importance for national monument protection. The INTERIOR falls outside national monument protection, as do the extensions towards the adjoining eastern warehouse, which is also not protected.

Description

The dwelling house has a rectangular floor plan and stands with its front facade on the west side oriented towards the water. It is built of Frisian yellow brickwork and is covered by a hipped roof with black burnt corrugated Frisian tiles. The northern side facade and front facade are plastered with Portland.

The flat plasterwork is enlivened by the light relief of imitation-tectonic elements, such as rustication blocks and setting and closing stones, decorative mouldings which are roughcast or provided with elongated diamond heads, and imitation natural stone cladding. The four closing stones in the first storey are decorated with fruit motifs.

The north-west corner of the facade is opened on the west and north sides by round-arched portals; the internal portico is closed off on the west side by a simple wrought-iron gate. The facades in the portico are executed in fair-faced brickwork.

The front facade is horizontally articulated by a plinth, bands along the lower and intermediate sill, a simple string course and a band at the level of the gutter and below the gable finial. The gable top is distinguished by projecting corner pilasters and a setting for the drip moulding, as well as by pilasters on consoles over the gable top, in which a round arch and two round-arched windows; the whole is terminated by a finial, crowned with a basement on which stands a short obelisk. On the front facade wrought-iron wall anchors (ornamental).

The light openings consist of H-windows; on the first storey under a straight closure, on the gable top under a semicircular closure with decorative brickwork (herringbone bond: yellow, black, red) in the tympanum. All windows have brown glazed sill tiles.

The north facade is blind and the plasterwork imitates natural stone cladding.

Valuation

The dwelling house in Craftsman-traditional style, renovated in the period 1890-1905 and enlivened with 'plasterwork-Eclecticism', presumably by the village carpenter Durk Wijma, is of general cultural-historical and architectural-historical importance:

- as a particular expression of socio-economic development, namely the rise and flourishing of the cheese trade in the grassland area of Friesland;

- as an architectural translation of the flourishing of the cheese trade through the functional changes which the dwelling house has undergone;

- because of the exceptional ornamentation of the dwelling house;

- as the principal building of a historically developed complex which is connected with the cheese trade;

- because of the historical-spatial relationship of the dwelling house with land and water routes, in particular through its location at the unloading quay;

- because of the reasonable degree of recognisability of the exterior.
