Inleiding
Waardering

Description
Introduction
The DWELLING at Seerp van Galemawei 4 lies within the boundary of the protected village townscape of the terp village Mantgum, north of the through road. The Galemawei forms the western part of this road which has traditionally run centrally through the terp village. East of the Galemawei, after the Frijbuorren, the through road - which from here is called It Bosk - bends in a southerly direction. The dwelling was built as a house for a person of independent means and after 1929 was taken into use as the official residence for the mayor of the former municipality of Baarderadeel, which in 1984 was incorporated into the municipality of Littenseradiel. The dwelling is set back from the road, in line with the properties S. van Galemawei 2, 6 and 8, and is built in the middle of a large rectangular plot. This lies with the short side to the road, extends in a northwesterly direction and adjoins at the rear the plot of the property Mr. Janssenstrjitte 3. On the east and west sides it adjoins the plots of the properties S. van Galemawei 2 and 6. The dwelling was built around 1870 in eclectic style with predominant neo-classical elements. At the time of the construction of the dwelling the garden was also laid out. However, nothing of the original layout remains or is recognisable. Highly striking and perhaps belonging to the original garden design is the enormous red beech standing in the middle of the large, square front garden. At the same time more stately houses on spacious plots were built on the Galemawei, on the commission of wealthy citizens and people of independent means. Visually, typologically and stylistically these structures (Seerp van Galemawei 11, 13, 15, 2, 4, 6 and 8) belong together and form a clear unity. New structures also came into being on the Meester Janssenstrjitte and on the Frijbuorren in that period, such as for example nos. 2 and 1. These are also built in neo-classical style and belong, both visually, structurally and stylistically, with the mentioned dwellings on the van Galemawei. Although a number of exterior components and interiors are no longer intact, in any event the front facades and a number of side and rear facades are to a large extent original; they are as a whole visually and structurally defining for the appearance - together with the street profile, the trees, the fences - and the great cultural-historical value of both this part of the protected townscape and of the entire village, within and outside the provincial boundaries. Further disturbances to these dwellings would seriously affect the appearance of the street and thus of the protected townscape. This fact and the great cultural-historical value of the village structure in connection with the historically valuable buildings justify protection at national level of both the mentioned dwelling Seerp van Galemawei 4 and the dwellings at Seerp van Galemawei 11, 13, 15 and 8.
Description
The single-storey dwelling has a square floor plan, with an adjoining coach house combined with a shed on the northwest side. The dwelling is covered by a truncated hipped roof of black glazed Lucas Ysbrand tiles, on which four octagonal chimneys are placed with chimney surrounds and iron ornaments. The high main structural frame, decorated on the front side by four rendered ornamental motifs, extends through to the side facades and the rear facade. The property is built from brown brick; the plinth is of natural stone; four rectangular natural stone plaques decorate in the front facade the spaces between windows and plinth. The front facade is decorated in the corners with two shallow pilasters with mirror panels and is symmetrically divided in the middle by the high risalit. In the middle risalit is located the entrance section with natural stone steps and porch. The double wooden door is decorated by panels and recess-shaped grilles and a profiled centre stile with small capital. Above in the middle risalit is the balcony placed on large consoles and cast-iron railing. The roof dormer is closed off by a profiled tympanum-shaped moulding. In the two symmetrical facade sections a total of four cross windows with fanlights are placed, which are decorated by rendered eyebrows with flower-like base and palmette-like curl. In the right side facade is a high cross window with fanlight and rounded surround. In the left side facade are two cross windows with fanlight and rounded surround and two smaller windows. The cross windows rest on natural stone sills. In the rear facade are three slightly arched windows and two doors. On the roof panels above the rear and the side facades small wooden roof dormers are fitted. Behind on the left is the coach house placed under a gabled roof, which was presumably somewhat remodelled around 1900 and fitted with an Art Nouveau-like yellow brick motif. On the front side sits the large (renewed) carriage entrance door. Above this an eight-pane window under a segmental arch of yellow brick. A slightly projecting moulding of yellow brick encloses the front facade. In the rear facade the same ornamental motif is applied. In the right side facade are a door, a straight window and a moulded roundel. In the left, to the rear recessed facade, is fitted in yellow brick a roundel with, radially placed, four brick bands. Below the roundel are two rectangular windows of recent date. The INTERIOR of the former house for a person of independent means has been thoroughly remodelled.
Valuation

- because of the balanced and qualitatively high-value original design, still visibly present in particular in the front facade;
- because of the ornamentation and the use of materials;
- as an essential part of a larger whole within the protected village townscape, which is of cultural-historical, architectural-historical and urban planning importance of national significance;
- because of the location within the protected village townscape, connected with the development and expansion of the region and the village;
- for the appearance of the region and the entire village;
- because of the historical-spatial relationship with the development of the structure of the village;
- because of the historical relationship with the administrative development of the region;
- because of the architectural integrity of the front facade, in relation to the visual and structural integrity of the protected village townscape.
