Inleiding:
RAADHUIS uit 1870 in Eclectische stijl. Opdrachtgever was burgemeester Wilhelmus Knaapen tevens textielfabrikant. De tekening werd gemaakt door H.A. Aghterberg uit Geldrop. Aannemer Frans van den Berg bouwde het voor f 5176,00. In oorsprong stond het raadhuis vrijstaand op de hoek met de Hofstraat. De voor- of zuidgevel staat aan de Heuvel. Aan de westkant grenst de voormalige tramremise en aan de noordkant het voormalige postkantoor die beiden buiten de bescherming vallen. Nu is het raadhuis in gebruik bij Publieke Werken van de gemeente.
Omschrijving:
Symmetrisch tweelaags blokvormig bouwwerk onder schilddak belegd met leien. De monumentale voorgevel telt drie traveeën. De middenrisaliet bevat de hoofdingang met een frontale hardstenen stoep van twee treden, met erboven op de verdieping een balkon, bekroond door een trapachtige attiek met piron en aan weerskanten een liggende gebeeldhouwde hardstenen leeuw, waarin een uurwerk. Oorspronkelijk zat op de begane grond een politiepost met dienstwoning en op de verdieping de secretarie met de raadzaal. In de architectuur is duidelijk onderscheid gemaakt tussen deze functies. De onderbouw heeft een lage en de bovenbouw een hoge verdiepingshoogte. Ter markering van deze twee bevindt zich in de gevel een hardstenen cordonlijst. Al de muuropeningen zijn getoogd. Op de verdieping zijn ze voorzien van achtruits schuifvensters. In de voorgevel hebben ze geprofileerde hardstenen omlijstingen en onder de dorpels twee voluutvormige kraagstenen. Op de begane grond zijn zesruitsschuifvensters zonder omlijstingen. De voorgevel heeft een hardstenen plint en een kroonlijst met een gestucte boogfries, ter plaatse van de risaliet voorzien van vijf voluutvormige consoles. De voorgevel wordt begrensd door geblokte hoekpilasters. Het metselwerk bestaat uit handgevormde baksteen gemetseld in kruisverband. Het balkonhek is van smeed- en gietijzerwerk. Op de nok van het dak tussen de twee hoekschoorstenen een luidklokje, in verbinding met het uurwerk. De indeling van het raadhuis is na de herbestemming sterk gewijzigd. Wel heeft het interieur nog enkele waardevolle elementen. Op de westmuur van de voormalige raadzaal bevinden zich twee authentieke muurschilderingen, voorstellende het wapen van Geldrop en de Brabantse leeuw. Ook staat er op de verdieping achter het balkon het authentieke koperen uurwerk opgesteld. Het is recent omgebouwd voor electrische bediening.
In de voorgevel jaartalsteen met opschrift "W. Knaapen burgemeester" en gedenksteen met het opschrift: "ter herinnering aan het verblijf te Geldrop van I- 2.R.V.A. (legercorps) van 2 october 1914 tot 21 januari 1916 is deze steen geplaatst door de officieren dezer afdeling op 6 april 1919" met in reliëf een afbeelding van het wapen van het legercorps, twee gekruiste kanonnen met erboven een kroon.
Waardering:
Het raadhuis is van algemeen belang. Description:
Symmetrical two-storey cubic building under hipped roof covered with slate. The monumental front facade has three bays. The central risalit contains the main entrance with a frontal ashlar stone step of two treads, above which on the upper floor a balcony, crowned by a stepped attic with a roof crest and on either side a reclining carved ashlar stone lion containing a clock. Originally on the ground floor there was a police post with official residence and on the upper floor the secretariat with the council chamber. In the architecture a clear distinction has been made between these functions. The lower structure has a low and the upper structure a high storey height. To mark these two, there is an ashlar stone cornice band in the facade. All the wall openings are arched. On the upper floor they are provided with multi-pane sash windows. In the front facade they have moulded ashlar stone framings and beneath the sills two volute-shaped corbels. On the ground floor are six-pane sash windows without framings. The front facade has an ashlar stone plinth and a cornice with a stuccoed arch frieze, at the location of the risalit provided with five volute-shaped consoles. The front facade is bounded by rusticated corner pilasters. The masonry consists of hand-shaped brick laid in cross-bond. The balcony railing is wrought and cast ironwork. On the ridge of the roof between the two corner chimneys a small bell, connected to the clock mechanism. The layout of the town hall has been greatly altered after change of use. However, the interior still has some valuable elements. On the west wall of the former council chamber are two authentic wall paintings, depicting the coat of arms of Geldrop and the Brabant lion. Also on the upper floor behind the balcony is the authentic copper clock mechanism displayed. It has recently been converted for electric operation.
In the front facade a date stone with the inscription "W. Knaapen burgemeester" and a commemorative stone with the inscription: "in remembrance of the stay in Geldrop of I-2.R.V.A. (army corps) from 2 October 1914 to 21 January 1916 this stone is placed by the officers of this division on 6 April 1919" with in relief an image of the coat of arms of the army corps, two crossed cannons with a crown above.
