The register's description

Inleiding:

Introduction:

The English garden, which was laid out around 1870, was created around the castle Geldrop on an approximately rectangular plan. The boundaries are as follows: on the west side lies the castle drive, on the south side the Mierloseweg, on the east side the Kleine Dommel and on the north side the castle wood.

The garden is partially separated on the Mierloseweg by a brick retaining wall. In the northwest corner of the English garden lies the castle, as well as the steward's house adjoining the coach house and stable (II), service dwelling (III) and small utility building (IV). The castle is surrounded by a U-shaped pond feature, which originally formed part of the moat which was partially filled in around 1870. Various small ditches run through the garden for drainage purposes.

Description:

The garden is an English landscape garden, furnished with curved winding gravel paths which enclose irregularly shaped plots. Another typical characteristic is the elevated position of the castle in relation to the level of the surrounding garden.

The composition of the garden consists of lawns, meadows and wooded areas which enclose spaces of varying size, bordered by shrubs and groups of trees with curved vistas over the paths. The planting is very varied. The trees originate from all over the world, in particular from North America and the Far East. The most exotic trees and shrubs stand on and around the lawn directly south of the castle. At the edge of the lawn stands a coast redwood or mammoth tree from California.

Close by stand two plane trees, an Oriental and a Mediterranean species. Together they form one dome-shaped canopy down to the ground, some branches have grown together. Before 1970 a path ran from the Hofstraat to the castle between these plane trees. Viewed from the plane trees, across the lawn, stands in an easterly direction the gigantic weeping beech, the showpiece of the garden. The ring at the base of the trunk presumably originated from grafting the tree. At the southeastern corner of the pond feature stands a very rare tree, the metasequoia. The species was introduced to the Western world for the first time in 1948. Before that time it was assumed to be extinct, only fossils were known. The species was discovered in Tibet.

Further east in the garden stands an evergreen oak originating from subtropical regions. Because of the luxuriant vegetation in the English garden, which has a moderating effect on winter cold, the tree is able to survive.

The castle drive is furnished with avenue planting of Dutch oaks. Where the Kleine Dommel borders the English garden stands a broad strip of trees, among which there are virtually no exotic specimens. There stand groups of indigenous deciduous trees which, according to the tradition of the English garden, form the framing of the vistas.

In the northeastern corner lies the Donkey Meadow. Formerly this was bounded on one side by a maple avenue. These maples were blown over in 1942. A stump at the corner of the Donkey Meadow still recalls this avenue. There are many shrubs, including American and Asian species of rhododendrons and several prunus varieties. In the ground flora of the English garden there is also great variety, due to the different terrain conditions: grassy areas, wooded sections and waterside areas. To be mentioned are the spring-flowering spurge, daisies, speedwell and self-heal. In the English garden there are two meadows. One is situated east of the large lawn and the other is the aforementioned Donkey Meadow. Here bloom in spring inter alia wood anemone, snowdrops, wild hyacinths and daffodils and in summer cuckooflower and buttercups, orpine, sorrel and ground ivy. Around the castle in front of the large lawn are found the exotic plants. These include inter alia the coralberry from tropical regions and Persian hogweed at the pond feature. The ditches are in some places particularly rich in plants. In the water we find inter alia water plantain, stitchwort, watercress, water chervil and yellow iris. At the waterside grow various umbellifer species, including water dropwort and bittersweet.

Valuation:

The garden of the country estate Kasteel Geldrop is of general importance. It has cultural-historical significance as a particular expression of a cultural and socio-economic development, in particular the development and growth of country estates in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, based on an older castle with its appurtenances. The garden has garden-historical values; it is of significance for the history of garden architecture and is of particular significance through the complete condition in which the whole has been preserved. It has ensemble values as a determining component of a coherent ensemble with auxiliary buildings and has been preserved intact.
