Inleiding

Kropholler (Amsterdam) is toegevoegd.

Introduction

Northwest of the wing (2) situated at the street level stands, also directly at the street, the former CONVENT CHAPEL of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a Romanesque Revival building with a single-aisle nave and semicircular closed choir, to a design by the architect Th. Asseler (Amsterdam) from 1878-'80, to which between 1908-'10 a Berlage-style entrance wing with tower to a design by A.J. Kropholler (Amsterdam) has been added. On 21 June 1879 the foundation stone was laid and the consecration took place a year later, on 27 June 1880. For the new construction of 1908-'10 the old, square-plan tower was demolished.

In 1948 the chapel was reconsecrated. In 1967 the interior of the chapel was modernised, during which the wall paintings were whitewashed over and the high choir was removed. Since the closure of the convent the chapel has been used as a prayer centre and for the performance of, among other things, concerts.

Description

The unoriented chapel has a rectangular plan and consists of a single-aisle section of four bays, containing the nave and the choir with a lower, semicircular apse. The chapel is covered by a gabled roof with slate in Dutch bond. On the roof stand two roof dormers.

The brick facades are articulated by a sandstone plinth, brick pilasters and a closing round-arch frieze with decorative brickwork. In accordance with the arrangement with the side choir, in the two eastern bays of this facade above the string course and the solid masonry two eight-lobed rose windows have been placed, while the identical rose windows in the two western bays, adjacent to the choir, crown a row of four lancets. In the windows are stained-glass panels placed, depicting scenes from the life of Christ (including depictions of the Pilgrims at Emmaus, Pietà, Presentation in the Temple, Christ in his workshop). The apse has round-arch windows with an iron fork tracery, in which stained-glass is placed. The windows are protected with burglar bars.

In the northern facade two facade stones are set in above one another. The oldest, limestone specimen, has in high relief an image of the Holy Family, beneath which the inscription: "St.Joseph Care". The second stone is executed in sandstone and has the inscription: "In memory of the / consecration of the chapel / 2 September 1948". The entrance wing built in 1909 consists of the western facade, against which an open porch with an overhead octagonal tower has been built. The porch consists of two wall piers and two piers, which are connected by an open-worked brick wall. Masonry and piers have granite bases and fluted, sandstone capitals, abaci, mouldings and lintels. In the porch of importance are the tile floor and the affixed winged door, whose lights are adorned with cross-shaped burglar bars. Above the porch, against the octagonal tower, a limestone Sacred Heart image has been placed. The tower has an open bell gallery and the overhead constricted octagonal spire, covered with slate in Dutch bond, is crowned by a wrought-iron cross with weathervane. South of the chapel is the sacristy. In the chapel covered with stucco vaults wall paintings were applied in 1909 by the painter Koolen from Sittard.

These are probably still present under the later whitewashing.

Valuation

The chapel is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical value as an example of spiritual development, namely the flourishing of religious orders and congregations in the nineteenth century and is also of importance as an example of the typological development of the contemplative convent. It is of architectural-historical importance because of the style and the particular use of materials; it is also of importance because of its place in the work of the architects Asseler and Kropholler. It has ensemble values because of the coherence of convent, chapel, garden and farm buildings. It is also of importance in relation to the integrity of the surroundings, where the previously protected Capuchin convent is also located.
