The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

The oldest part of the cloister consists of a cloister wing set at right angles to the street, of which the first stone was laid on 6 June 1860 by the dean and the mayor of Velp. The building adjoins the eastern side of the cloister courtyard. The building contains, among other things, the refectory and nun cells. It was completed on 15 October 1861.

Description The three-storey wing has a rectangular plan and is covered by a hipped roof, tiled with slated tiles in Maas roofing. Both the street and the rear facade have three window axes, have a plastered plinth and are built in handmade brick and are finished with a tooth and a mouse-tooth moulding. The opening windows have sandstone thresholds, fanlights and asymmetrical glazing bars. The parapets of the windows are executed with decorative brickwork. Originally the eastern and western facades of the building had ten window axes. Through the construction of the wings (2) and (6) these are now only partially in view.

Of importance is that below this part of the cloister a series of old, with brick herringbone vaults arched-over cellars of the former castle are still present. Above the cellars on the ground floor, bordering the inner courtyard, is a corridor running the entire length of the building, with on the northeastern and southwestern side a stairwell.

Valuation

The cloister building is of general interest. It has cultural-historical value as an example of a spiritual development, namely the flourishing of orders and congregations in the nineteenth century and is also of importance as an example of the typological development of the contemplative cloister. It is architecturally-historically of importance because of the style, the particular use of materials and the sober ornamentation and is also of importance because of the presence of older castle remains. It has ensemble values because of the coherence of cloister, chapel, garden and utility buildings. It is also of importance in connection with the intactness of the surroundings, where also the already previously protected Capuchin cloister is located.
