The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

The construction of the southern CLOISTER WING probably took place simultaneously with the construction of wing (1), namely in 1861. The wing has the same detailing and is situated above older basements. The building contained among other things the former municipal or recreation room. On the upper storey, cells were built for the housing of the sisters.

Description The building has a rectangular floor plan, two storeys, and is covered by a gabled roof with slate in Dutch bond. The southern façade comprises seven window bays, the western four.

The hand-moulded brick façades are executed more soberly than those of the building (1) situated on the street. The windows too, with an asymmetrical glazing bar division and fanlight, have the same detailing.

Beneath the southern part of the building lie five basements vaulted with brick cross vaults, a remnant of the former castle Bronckhorst, which was situated here. These basements are accessible via a staircase hall on the western side of the building.

Valuation

The cloister building is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as an example of a spiritual development, namely the flourishing of orders and congregations in the nineteenth century and is moreover of importance as an example of the typological development of the contemplative cloister. It is of architectural-historical importance because of the style, the exceptional use of materials and the sober ornamentation and is moreover of importance because of the presence of building parts of the former castle. It has ensemble values because of the coherence of cloister, chapel, garden and outbuildings. It is moreover of importance in relation to the integrity of the surroundings, where the previously protected Capuchin cloister is also situated.
