Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The CLOISTER WING, situated parallel to the street, partly with basement, between building (1) and the chapel (5), dates in its core probably to the same building year as building (4), namely 1867, but was provided with a new front façade in 1879-'80 (designed by architect Th. Asseler (Amsterdam)), which in turn was modernised in 1916 by the construction of a new entrance arrangement and an entrance hall shaped like a three-lobed form in plan, the 'rotunda'. By the addition of this hall, just over half of the inner courtyard was built over.
Description
This two-storey wing has a rectangular floor plan and is covered by a gabled roof, with scaled slate in Dutch bond. The building stands on the northern side of the cloister courtyard. The symmetrical front façade dates from 1880 and comprises seven window bays. Beside the projecting entrance arrangement with the roof dormer situated above it, the façade is articulated by the vertical accents provided by the slightly projecting second and sixth window bays. These are provided with a stepped gable with pinnacle and round light. All windows are wooden cross windows with casements and a twelve-pane glazing bar division. Cross-shaped motifs are set into the arched openings. On the ground floor hardstone thresholds are used, on the upper storey a threshold moulding. Noteworthy are the basement windows in the outer window bays.
Above these is each time a chamber.
The entrance arrangement consists of a renewed panelled door with arched fanlight in a frame moulded from pressed brick with pointed gable, which is crowned by a hardstone block with incised cross motif.
In the interior of this reception building, noteworthy are among others the small hall, the large semi-circular hall accessible via sliding doors (single-storey under flat roof) with hardstone floor and stained-glass windows with geometric and floral motifs (by I. Menke, Goch) and the reception room situated beside the small hall with the original roll.
Valuation
The cloister building is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as an example of a spiritual development, namely the flourishing of orders and congregations in the nineteenth century and is moreover of importance as an example of the typological development of the contemplative cloister. It is of architectural-historical importance because of the style, the exceptional use of materials and the sober ornamentation and is moreover of importance in the oeuvre of architect Asseler. It has ensemble values because of the coherence of cloister, chapel, garden and outbuildings. It is moreover of importance in relation to the integrity of the surroundings, where the previously protected Capuchin cloister is also situated.
