Inleiding
KOUSENFABRIEK van de N.V. Nederlandse Schoen en Lederfabriek Bata, gebouwd in de vormen van het Functionalisme in 1938 naar ontwerp van architecten van de moederfabriek in Zlin, uitgevoerd door een eigen bouwbureau.
Omschrijving
De kousenfabriek uit 1938 is een drielaags onderkelderd bedrijfsgebouw onder plat dak met iets uitstekende houten gootlijst. Vierkante lifttoren, in verband met uitbreidingsmogelijkheid geschikt voor vijf verdiepingen.
Skeletbouw van gewapend beton, gepleisterd en gewit. IJzeren roedenramen, deels origineel, deels gewijzigd in aluminiumroeden. Latere horizontale buitenzonweringen. Aan de zijkanten ijzeren brandtrappen met bordessen.
Achterzijde met latere uitbouwen.
Waardering
De Kousenfabriek is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van een sociaal-economische ontwikkeling, namelijk de industrialisatie en de internationalisering van Noord-Brabant in het Interbellum. Het is tevens van belang voor de typologische ontwikkeling van de hoogbouw voor de schoen-en lederindustrie, onder invloed van de uitgangspunten van het Functionalisme. Het heeft architectuurhistorisch belang als karakteristiek en zeldzaam voorbeeld van het Functionalisme en als voorbeeld van fabrieksbouw met een sterk internationaal karakter. Het is onderdeel van een ensemble, namelijk de Companytown Batadorp, die voor Nederland als een zeer bijzondere stedenbouwkundige ontwikkeling aangemerkt dient te worden.
