Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The simple Roman Catholic CHURCH, dedicated to St. Martin of Tours, was built in the years 1860-1862 in Neo-Gothic style. The design of the cruciform church is by architect H.J. Wennekers, brother of the pastor. In order to build the church, a plot of land was purchased in 1859/'60 on the eastern village edge of Warga, on the road to Wartena. The groundwork for the church, the parsonage and the burial ground was carried out by G.A. Heidstra from Heerenveen while Joh. Arends from Dronrijp was the contractor for the construction of the church and parsonage. Due to his premature death, the construction was completed by a contractor from Marssum. The church was separated from the public road by a cast-iron FENCE, which on the basis of its detailing can be attributed to the iron foundry of Benedictus Mohrmann from Leeuwarden. Some interior components come from the former hidden church that stood in the Jornahuisterpolder, such as the baptismal font (1791) and the ornaments on the confessional. The maker of the stained glass windows is not known; the liturgical furnishings come from the workshop of P.J.H. Cuypers. The fourteen Stations of the Cross have been present in the church since 1957. They were painted by F.H. Bach, an artist from Groningen in a romantic-realist manner. The church was restored in 1939 and repaired in 1988/89.
Description
The church has the plan of a Latin cross with a three-sided closed choir and is oriented east-west. The masonry of the church and tower is built in brown brick. The nave is divided vertically into four bays by once chamfered buttresses; the chamfers are capped with ashlar. On the first buttress on the north-west side is a memorial stone with a chronogram: Deo gratIas LargItatI frIsIae CathoLICae LaUs seMper (1861).
The church is divided horizontally by a plinth with ashlar capping, a stringcourse at the height of the stepped pointed-arch windows with mullion, quatrefoil and coloured stained glass. The south gable is partly crossed by an intermediate section to the parsonage. In the last bay of the nave and in the side gables of the transepts are blind windows. In the end gables of the transepts are a pointed-arch window and a rose window. The three-sided closed choir is opened with pointed-arch windows in each wall plane and is terminated by a corbelling on a stretcher plinth. On the choir a wrought-iron cross.
The tower, on the west side, has a square base and tapers once to an octagon; beneath the chamfer five courses of brick dentils. On the west side of the tower is the church entrance in a portal with small columns, above which a ogee-gable set with crockets. A two-step ashlar stoop leads to the double church door with wrought-iron ornamental hinges and fittings. The lower building volume with plinth and rose window has twice chamfered buttresses crowned with simple pinnacles with Neo-Gothic detailing. The west gable is opened by a colossal pointed-arch window with quatrefoils furnished with coloured stained glass without figurative representation. The second building volume is an octagonal belfry, accompanied by once chamfered buttresses and an octagonal tapering spire. The belfry has at four sides lancet-shaped louvres with louver boards and a small gable. The spire has a flagstaff shutter and is crowned by a tower cross with weathervane. The church roof and tower spire are covered with slate in Maastricht bonding. In the eastern roof slope on the choir side the roof has a wooden roof dormer and on the ridge a cross. The spire is crowned by a tower cross with a weathervane.
The INTERIOR of the tower has a porch with a stuccoed cross-ribbed vault. On the belfry in the tower stands a simple, small steel bell frame with wooden pulley wheel and a straight bell rope with the date 1849; the bell was cast in 1949 at Van Bergen Heiligerlee/Jongerius Amersfoort (this is not protected by the state). In the north-western corner of the church nave is a baptistry enclosed by cast-iron railings. Only there is the floor laid with coloured floor tiles, otherwise the church has a wooden floor. In the baptistry stands a painted ashlar baptismal font from 1791. On the west side of the church is the organ gallery with a two-manual instrument in a simple case.
The Neo-Gothic FURNISHINGS of the church were largely completed in the first period after the construction of the church and include valuable interior components, including the stained glass, high altar and side altars, statues of saints, the communion rail, the pulpit, the church pews, an organ and Stations of the Cross. In the church porch is a stained glass window with a half-figure of Saint Bernard. In the nave of the church the stained glass windows have representations of the twelve apostles with as inscription the Articles of the Creed; in the north transept representations from the life of Mary and in the south transept representations from the life of St. Joseph; in the choir stained glass windows were placed in 1894 (private donations), depicting the life of the patron saint St. Martin and scenes from the New Testament. On the walls hang the fourteen Stations of the Cross by F.H. Bach from Groningen.
The high altar and the side altars date from 1871 and were made by the Cuypers workshop. The high altar has statues of Saints Martin, Boniface, Peter and Willibrord. The side altars are dedicated to Saints Mary and Joseph. At various places in the church Neo-Gothic statues of saints are placed on the walls.
On the communion rail, at the separation of the choir and the people's church, sculptured representations of the washing of the disciples' feet and Moses and the burning bush.
The pulpit at the north-eastern corner pier of choir and transept dates from 1885. The pulpit rests on a wooden, square column; the preacher's seat can be reached by a staircase from the choir; on the sounding board panels carved wood with statues of saints; the tester has fine carved wood: in the ornamentation and detailing Gothic architectural motifs are applied.
The north transept stands on the border of the public road. Otherwise a cast-iron FENCE forms the separation between the church grounds and the public road. The cast-iron, fluted fence stiles with acanthus leaf and acanthus bud decoration stand on a brick retaining wall with ashlar blocks; the fence work has cast points and hanging ornaments.
Valuation
The Neo-Gothic church from 1860-1862 designed by H.J. Wennekers with Neo-Gothic furnishings and fence is of general cultural-historical and architectural-historical importance:
- as a special expression of a spiritual development, namely the emancipation of the Catholic church,
- because of the high aesthetic quality of the design,
- because of the high aesthetic quality of the interior components that were added to it in the same style in the first years after construction,
- as the principal object of a very complete, small-scale Roman Catholic church complex,
- because of its special significance for the silhouette of the village of Wergea,
- because of the high degree of architectural integrity of the constituent components.
