Inleiding

Introduction

SERVICE DWELLINGS belonging to the hydraulic engineering complex consisting of the Smeenge pumping station with a lock and traffic bridge, lock keeper's cottage, scotch-balk shed and service dwellings near De Voorst and Vollenhove. The block of six dwellings belonging to the complex for pumping station and lock personnel, as well as for one or two road maintenance workers, was tendered in the third quarter of 1941 and was carried out by N.V. Panagro in Warmond. The dwellings were completed in 1942. They form part of the pumping station complex built in the years 1939-1942 on behalf of Rijkswaterstaat (Department of the Zuiderzeewerken division Noordoostpolderwerken, later Rijksdienst IJsselmeerpolders), which was designed by ir. D. Roosenburg (Den Haag). The service dwellings were built in a simple, functional building style, which has a distant relationship with the architecture of the Delft School. Three double sheds stand at the rear, which form part of the original design of the complex.

Description

A row of six dwellings built in facing brickwork with upper storey under improved Dutch tiles covered, projecting saddle roofs with four brick chimneys. All dwellings contain rectangular facade openings which stand under roll courses. The window sills are made of stoneware tiles. The left dwelling in the row standing parallel to the road has a facade projecting in comparison to the other dwellings. This dwelling, intended for the engine driver of the pumping station, is thus larger than the other five dwellings.

Valuation

The service dwellings are of general importance on account of their cultural-historical and architectural-historical value.

- The dwellings have cultural-historical value because their construction marks the creation of the Noordoostpolder and they are therefore the oldest still existing dwellings in the Noordoostpolder.

- The dwellings have architectural-historical value on account of their austere design characteristic of the building period.

- The dwellings have ensemble value on account of the particular visual and functional coherence with the other components of the complex.

- The row of dwellings is moreover of importance on account of the recognisability and the high degree of integrity of the exterior.
