Inleiding

Introduction

Electric PUMPING STATION Smeenge (name since 1950), belonging to the water engineering complex consisting of the pumping station with lock and traffic bridge, lock keeper's cottage, sluice gate store and service dwellings at De Voorst and Vollenhove. The housing of the pumping station was built in the years 1939-1941 on behalf of Rijkswaterstaat (Department of Zuiderzee Works, Department of Noordoostpolder Works, later State Service IJsselmeer Polders) according to the design of ir. D. Roosenburg (The Hague). The building, in which the pumps and electric motors are housed, is constructed in a functionalist style and shows great external similarities with the other buildings belonging to the complex and with those of the pumping station and lock complexes at Lemmer and Urk. The pumping is carried out by means of two pump units each with a capacity of 570 m3 per minute. The mechanical installation of the pumping station was executed by N.V. Electrotechnische Industrie formerly Willem Smit and Co. (Slikkerveer). For the manufacture of the machines, there was cooperation with N.V. Werkspoor (Amsterdam). The pumps are screw pumps with inclined shafts. The machines of the pumping station were put into operation on 22 April 1941. Responsible for the construction of the pumping station building was the Department of Zuiderzee Works, Department of Noordoostpolder Works. The concrete substructure of the pumping station was manufactured by N.V. Christiani and Nielsen's Reinforced Concrete Company from The Hague. The steel frame of the superstructure (with brick infill) for the "fire-, bomb- and shrapnel-proof" superstructure of the pumping station was manufactured by N.V. Machinefabriek Braat in Rotterdam. The specifications for the steel frame of the pumping station building date from December 1939. The spiral casings, suction and discharge pipelines are also made of reinforced concrete. A transformer station (low-voltage building) originally belonging to the pumping station and built at the same time was placed at some distance on a site in the province of Overijssel on the other side of the Blokzijl-Kadoelen canal (Vollenhover Canal). This building is outside the protection.

Description

The undercellared building, constructed from a rectangular floor plan, is provided with a steel frame within which walls of fair-faced brick in English bond are built. The pumping station building contains straight-closed facade openings and due to the height difference has a plinth with a steel top edge only on the east side and parts of the gable ends. The building stands under a projecting, covered with improved Dutch tiles, three-part gabled roof. The ridges of the lower roof sections project further than the eaves and form a blunt point. The concrete undersides of the projecting roof sections are provided with cassette-shaped recesses. The middle section of the western long facade running parallel to the road is higher, whereby the upper part of the roof consists of roof panels of unequal length. This facade has an almost symmetrical layout with three tall windows placed within a steel frame in the higher middle section with nine-light aluminium frames that have replaced the original steel frames. The steel stiles on either side of the windows are the principal rafters of the construction. Four canopy struts are attached to these, which carry a steel beam. This is used for the attachment of the emergency gate of the pumping station. The left facade section contains a square ventilation opening, the right facade section is provided with two small windows. The northern gable end contains a door and two windows standing on the plinth with steel frames. In the eastern long facade stand two tall windows on the plinth placed within a steel frame like those in the west facade. Between these windows stands a tall, partly projecting chimney. The left bay contains a window with a steel three-light frame. On the plinth in the right bay stands a small single-light window. The southern gable end has remained in its original condition. This facade contains four different windows with steel frames and a double steel door fitted with a handle, both door parts of which run on wheels. Above the narrow window in the left bay the name of the pumping station is displayed in metal letters. The interior of the pumping station is outside the protection at national level.
