Inleiding

Description
Introduction
LOCK with TRAFFIC BRIDGE belonging to the hydraulic engineering complex consisting of the Smeenge pumping station, with lock and traffic bridge, lock keeper's cottage, shutter-beam shed and service dwellings near De Voorst and Vollenhove. The lock 'Voorstersluis' is one of the originally three locks, situated on the boundary of the polder, which were built to enable shipping between "Den Noordoostelijken Polder" and the boezem water surrounding the polder. The 'Voorster Sluis' serves to "bridge" the water level of the Zwolse Vaart in the polder to the approximately 7 metres higher level of the Kadoeler-/Voorstermeer (Vollenhover Kanaal) on the side of the "old land". The other two of the three large locks are those at Urk (Urker Sluis) and Lemmer (Friese or Lemster Sluis). The lock, like the other complex components, was built in the years 1939-1941 on commission of Rijkswaterstaat (Department of Zuiderzee Works, Noordoostpolder Works section, later State Service IJsselmeerpolders), designed by engineer D. Roosenburg (The Hague). The concrete components of the lock were manufactured by N.V. Christiani and Nielsen's Reinforced Concrete Company (The Hague). The original lock gates of the "Voorster Sluis" were replaced in 1988 by hydraulic mitre gates. A steel emergency sluice installed in the nineteen seventies, falling outside the protected scope, serves to protect the lock and as a reserve gate in the event of repair and replacement of the wooden lock gates. The lock is fitted with guide walls on both sides. The traffic bridge over the lock is of the bascule type, built by Constructiewerkplaats Hollandia (Krimpen a/d IJssel).
Description
The Voorster Sluis is a lock with a straight chamber with an operating building and a shutter-beam shed at the upper end, and a moveable traffic bridge over the lower end. The lock has straight chamber walls constructed of reinforced concrete, which are reinforced by means of vertical iron rods and are fitted with iron edges and standing wooden buffer posts. Granite and brick have also been used at the lock entrances. The lock gates (mitre gates) at the higher upper end are situated between the lock keeper's cottage and the shutter-beam shed. The height difference between the lock chamber quays and the higher-standing operating buildings and the bridge over the lock is bridged by stairs of concrete and granite. At the lock gates in the lower end, brick and granite have been used in addition to concrete. The granite corner blocks at this lock entrance are rounded. The lock gates are also attached to granite blocks here. The lock heads, the quays and the bridge are fitted with fencing composed of tubes. The traffic bridge spanning the lock chamber is a steel bascule bridge, which is fitted with an asphalted wooden bridge deck. At both lock heads there are wooden guide walls.
Valuation
The lock is of general importance because of its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value. - The lock has general cultural-historical value because its construction marks the beginning of the Noordoostpolder and it is among the oldest still existing buildings in the Noordoostpolder. The lock is also of importance because of the place it holds in the technical and typological development of locks in the Netherlands.
- The lock has general architectural-historical value because of its specific construction and the characteristic, purely functional design.
- The lock has ensemble value because of its remarkable visual and functional coherence with the other components of the complex and because of its location, which is inseparably linked to its function.
- The lock is moreover of importance because of its recognisability and its integrity.
