Inleiding

Introduction

SCOTCH-BALK SHED belonging to the hydraulic engineering complex consisting of the Smeenge pumping station, with a lock and traffic bridge, lock keeper's cottage, scotch-balk shed and service dwellings near De Voorst and Vollenhove. The building was constructed in the years 1939-1941 on behalf of Rijkswaterstaat (Department of the Zuiderzeewerken division Noordoostpolderwerken, later Rijksdienst IJsselmeerpolders) according to the design of ir. D. Roosenburg (Den Haag). The building was erected in functionalist style. The specification for the steel skeleton of the scotch-balk shed dates from December 1939. The shed standing to the right of the lock, opposite the lock keeper's cottage, has since lost its original function (emergency closure) and has been modified internally. The function of the scotch-balks has been taken over by the steel emergency gate attached to a steel construction on the other side of the lock from the first half of the nineteen-seventies, which therefore falls outside the protection. This serves to secure the lock and as a reserve door in case of repair and replacement of the wooden lock gates.

Description

From a rectangular plan a former scotch-balk shed with a concrete plinth and facades of facing brickwork within a steel frame. The shed stands under a projecting saddle roof covered with improved Dutch tiles, the ridges of which project further than the roof eaves and form a blunt point. The gable corners are accentuated by the white-painted steel skeleton elements, which also face three of the four facades. The three-part northern end gable is symmetrical and contains a rectangular window standing under a lintel with steel frame in each of the two lower facade sections. The gable top is five-sided. Both long facades are symmetrical and contain per facade three round windows with steel frames and a concrete drip gutter. Under the windows, across the entire width of the east facade there is a wooden overhang, under which tools and other materials are kept. The southern end gable contains two rectangular windows closed at the top and a large, non-original iron tilt door standing under a three-part fanlight, with a small standing window to its right. The interior of the scotch-balk shed falls outside the scope of national monument protection.

Valuation

The scotch-balk shed is of general importance on account of its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value.

- The shed has general cultural-historical value because its construction marks the beginning of the Noordoostpolder and it is among the oldest still existing structures in the Noordoostpolder.

- The shed has general architectural-historical value on account of its specific design characteristic of the building period, the use of materials and the construction and as an important work from the oeuvre of a prominent architect.

- The shed has ensemble value on account of the particular visual and functional coherence with the other components of the complex and on account of the location, with which it is inextricably linked.

- The shed is moreover of importance on account of the recognisability and the integrity of the exterior.
