Inleiding

Introduction

This large detached VILLA is located on the west side of the Mr. van Hasseltlaan. The villa was built in 1898-1899 by the Apeldoorn architect C.M. Gardenier (1856-?) in a Transitional style influenced by the Neo-Renaissance and - to a lesser extent - the Chalet style. Gardenier had purchased a number of plots in the Parken and acted as a project developer/architect. After 1905 he remained a building speculator, but no longer designed the dwellings himself. In 1915 he moved with his family to Utrecht.

The dwelling bears the name Klein Vredeoord, a name derived from the property at Oranjelaan 9, which is called Vredeoord. Major-General Schoch lived in this property. His daughters, one of whom was employed in the household at Het Loo, came to live on the Van Hasseltlaan.

Description

The brick building, laid in alternating bond, is erected on an approximately square ground plan and comprises two storeys under a hipped roof covered with half-smothered Frisian tiles. The flat is slightly sloping and contains a zinc gutter roof. The building is partially cellared. The facades have a cemented plinth and a plastered drip moulding at the height of the lower and upper window sills. These are, except for the moulding at the height of the upper window sills of the windows on the ground floor, profiled. The facades have plastered corner blocks.

The asymmetrically arranged FRONT FACADE contains on the right a projecting section that terminates in a gable top with a stone coping. This section contains on the ground floor a large single-pane sash window with a 3-pane fanlight. The upper storey has a two-light window with single-pane sash windows and likewise fanlights. Both windows have shutters and are relieved by a male-head console with plastered blocks, beneath which are joggle and closing stones. The closing stone has a diamond head. The gable top contains a 2-pane attic window, relieved by a stone segmental arch with plastered closing stone with diamond head. The far projecting roof overhang rests on a false beam with cut-out components and corbels. The roof edge has a profiled wind brace.

The left part of the facade has on the ground floor a rectangular wooden conservatory on a plastered basement. The front facade of the conservatory has in the middle a double sliding door with each one large glass panel and below 3 glass panels. Below the glass panels two cushion panels. Above the doors a 2-pane fanlight. To the left and right of the doors a window with the same arrangement as the doors and above it a single-pane fanlight. Both side facades of the conservatory have a two-light window with a lower window with a 2-pane glass panel and below a 4-pane glass panel and a 2-pane fanlight. Above the conservatory a balcony with simple wooden balustrade, accessible via a large frame with single-pane swing door. The frame has two single-pane side lights and three single-pane fanlights. The frame is relieved by a male-head console with plastered blocks, beneath which are joggle and closing stones. The closing stone has a diamond head.

The LEFT SIDE FACADE contains to the left of centre an arched portico with main entrance consisting of a hard stone step, panel door and fanlight. To the left and right a single-pane sash window with single-pane fanlight and shutters. The upper storey has on the left two T-windows with single-pane fanlights and shutters and on the right an inserted or modified and narrowed window (in the place of a blind?).

The BACK FACADE contains on the left a spacious single-storey extension, which was presumably added shortly after construction. On the right, the facade contains on the ground floor a 3-pane sliding door with 3-pane fanlight. The upper storey has on the left a 2-pane attic door with single-pane fanlight and shutters which gives access to the balcony above the extension. Originally a window was located here. In the centre the facade has two small single-pane windows. The back facade of the extension contains from left to right a 7-pane semi-circular cast-iron window, a panel door with 6-pane glass panel and two cast-iron windows as on the left.

The RIGHT SIDE FACADE has on the ground floor on the left a single-pane sash window with single-pane fanlight, in the centre a single-pane window behind safety bars with decorative brickwork below it and on the right a T-window with single-pane fanlight and shutters. At the height of the stair landing there is a T-window with single-pane fanlight. In the plinth a cellar light with 2-pane attic window and safety bars. The front facade of the extension has a panel door with in the centre a 3-pane glass panel and a single-pane fanlight. Frame and door are possibly relocated and originate from the original side or back facade.

The INTERIOR is still largely intact and contains among other things the following components. The hall contains a marble floor and a staircase with turned wooden balusters. The fanlight of the draught door in this hall is fitted with etched glass. The layout of the kitchen is virtually original and the kitchen contains a terrazzo floor and likewise counter-top. The toilet has an original wooden seat. The fireplace in one of the rooms has a black and white veined marble mantel.

Valuation

VILLA from 1898-1899 in Transitional architecture influenced by the Neo-Renaissance and the Chalet style.

- Of architectural historical value as a well and faithfully preserved example of a villa in Transitional architecture with ornaments influenced by the Neo-Renaissance and the Chalet style. The property stands out due to high-quality aesthetic qualities, material use and rich ornamentation. Characteristic features include, among others, the prominent conservatory against the front facade and the gable top beam in the gable top. There is an ensemble value as part of the villa district the Parken, within which the property is among the villa types current around 1890, which together with the older and later types and styles very well illustrate the development of villa construction.

- Of urban planning value due to its location on the Mr. van Hasseltlaan. The Mr. van Hasseltlaan still has a stock of historical houses preserved in fairly good condition, which together with many private and public green elements form an attractive, valuable streetscape.

- Of cultural-historical value as a recognizable element from a social development. The property was built as housing for the new and wealthy urban elite, which preferably settled in substantial villas in spaciously laid out romantically designed villa districts. The Parken is among the largest and oldest villa districts of this type in our country and the layout contributed to the fact that the appearance of the village and the social stratification of its population changed dramatically.
