Inleiding:
Voormalig DOUANEKANTOOR (tot 1-7-1990 als zodanig in gebruik) behorend tot het erachter gelegen entrepot, gebouwd in 1879 in sobere Eclectische stijl naar ontwerp van architect J.S.C. van der Wall.
Omschrijving:
Boven een natuurstenen plint geheel in rode baksteen opgetrokken hoekpand met een kelder, drie bouwlagen en een kapverdieping onder een schilddak met grijze pannen. Van de Stieltjesstraat buigt het gebouw richting Entrepothaven met een afgeschuinde hoek af waarna het na de eerste vensteras een lichte knik maakt. Hier bevindt zich een iets soberder vormgegeven zijvleugel van vijf vensterassen breed. De verschillende bouwlagen worden krachtig geaccentueerd door zware cordonlijsten. Alle vensters zijn van hout en zijn voorzien van natuurstenen (water)dorpels. De gevel heeft tot de eerste verdieping wit gepleisterd rustica blokwerk waarin elf zesledige rondboogvensters met wigvormige sluitstenen. In het midden van de zijde aan de Stieltjesstraat een brede houten deur met een halfrond bovenlicht, conform de naastgelegen vensters. Boven de cordonlijst van de eerste verdieping twaalf getoogde T-vensters. In de hoek en het deel aan de Stieltjesstraat met wit gepleisterde geprofileerde en getande omlijstingen. In het zijdeel met een stenen rollaag waarin een wit gepleisterde sluitsteen. In het representatieve deel gaat de cordonlijst, tussen de eerste en de tweede verdieping, onder de vensters over in een waterlijst gedragen door drie gedecoreerde houten consoles. De tweede verdieping is vormgegeven conform de eerste doch hier met iets minder hoge vensters. Het pand wordt bekroond door een brede kroonlijst. In het representatieve deel rustend op gedecoreerde consoles, in de zijvleugel zonder. In het dak, aan de voorzijde twee rechthoekige dakkapellen en in het zijdeel één.
Waardering:
Markant gelegen douanegebouw van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuur- en architectuurhistorische waarde alsook uit stedebouwkundig oogpunt. Tevens van belang wegens de historisch-functionele relatie met het nabijgelegen entrepotgebouw en de havenontwikkeling op de linker Maasoever.
