POORTGEBOUW totstandgekomen naar ontwerp van J.S.C. van de Wall in 1879 als kantoorgebouw van de Rotterdamsche Handelsvereeniging, in eclectische, vooral op het Romaans geinspireerde, bouwtrant. Het gebouw bestaat uit twee dwarsstaande vleugels van elk vier bouwlagen onder pannen schilddak, opgetrokken in baksteen op een natuurstenen plint, en een verbindingsstuk in het midden van twee bouwlagen en kapverdieping onder pannen schilddak, dat de eigenlijke poort vormt. Dit middengedeelte heeft aan beide zijden een middenrisaliet ter breedte van drie vensterassen en wordt bekroond door een frontonachtige kroonlijst met gepleisterde boogfriezen die aan beide zijden van de lisenen onder de rechte, gekorniste kroonlijst worden voortgezet over de breedte van een vensteras; in het midden een gepleisterde tondo met vierpas; de rondboogvormige vensters zijn voorzien van een geprofileerde, gepleisterde omlijsting gedragen door halfzuilen met bladkapitelen en onderaan voorzien van een gepleisterd fries met gestileerd bladmotief in reliëf. De noordelijke dwarsvleugel telt aan de smalle zijden twee vensterassen, de zuidelijke dwarsvleugel drie, maar deze heeft voor het overige dezelfde detaillering als de gevels van de noordelijke dwarsvleugel: omlopende, geprofileerde gepleisterde cordonlijsten boven de plint en tussen de eerste en tweede bouwlaag; gepleisterde blokken in de rondbogen boven de vensters op de beganegrondverdieping; gepleisterde, geprofileerde rondboogomlijstingen gedragen door halfzuilen met bladkapitelen op de eerste en - gedeeltelijk - op de tweede verdieping, en onderaan voorzien van een gepleisterd fries met gestileerd blad-motief, gevat in ruiten respectievelijk tondi; en gekoppelde rondboogvensters, gescheiden door lisenen en uitkragend door middel van een rondboogfries op de derde verdieping, waarvan de hoeken worden geaccentueerd door zeszijdige, afgeknotte hoektorentjes op natuurstenen consoles en die wordt afgesloten met een omlopend gepleisterd rondboogfries en kroonlijst. In de doorgang zijn aan beide zijden drie toegangen opgenomen met geprofileerde, gepleisterde, rondboogvormige omlijsting, de middelste met stoep. Kantoorgebouw in eclectische baksteenbouw met voor de jaren '70 van de negentiende eeuw kenmerkend gebruik van op Romaanse, Byzantijnse, Gotische en Renaissancevormen geinspireerde decoraties, deels gepleisterd, zoals rondboogfriezen, bladkapitelen en -friezen, vierpas en cordonlijsten en blokken in de vensterbogen, Markeringspunt in de door bouw-opdrachtgever L.Pincoffs in gang gezette ontwikkeling van het moderne havenbedrijf en de handel in Rotterdam, zowel door de verschijningsvorm als door de situering op een der havenhoofden, oorspronkelijk bedoeld als pendant van twee identieke kantoorgebouwen te weerszijden van de Binnenhaven. Description
GATEHOUSE building realised according to the design of J.S.C. van de Wall in 1879 as office building of the Rotterdamsche Handelsvereeniging, in eclectic style, inspired especially by Romanesque architecture. The building consists of two transverse wings each of four storeys under tiled hipped roof, constructed in brick on a natural stone plinth, and a connecting section in the middle of two storeys and roof storey under tiled hipped roof, which forms the actual gate. This central section has on both sides a central projection with the width of three window bays and is crowned by a fronton-like cornice with plastered arch friezes which on both sides of the pilasters are continued below the straight, corniced cornice across the width of a window bay; in the middle a plastered tondo with quatrefoil; the round-arched windows are provided with a profiled, plastered surround supported by half-columns with leaf capitals and at the bottom provided with a plastered frieze with stylised leaf motif in relief. The northern transverse wing has on the narrow sides two window bays, the southern transverse wing three, but otherwise has the same detailing as the facades of the northern transverse wing: continuous, profiled plastered cordon mouldings above the plinth and between the first and second storey; plastered blocks in the round arches above the windows on the ground floor storey; plastered, profiled round-arched surrounds supported by half-columns with leaf capitals on the first and - partially - on the second storey, and at the bottom provided with a plastered frieze with stylised leaf motif, set in squares and tondi respectively; and coupled round-arched windows, separated by pilasters and projecting by means of a round-arch frieze on the third storey, whose corners are accentuated by hexagonal, truncated corner turrets on natural stone consoles and which is finished with a continuous plastered round-arch frieze and cornice. In the passage three entrances are incorporated on both sides with profiled, plastered, round-arched surround, the middle one with steps. Office building in eclectic brick construction with characteristically applied to the 1870s use of decorations inspired by Romanesque, Byzantine, Gothic and Renaissance forms, partly plastered, such as arch friezes, leaf capitals and friezes, quatrefoils and cordon mouldings and blocks in the window arches.
