Omschrijving
Inleiding:

Description
Introduction:
Iron LIFTING BRIDGE as a functional component of the Rotterdam-Dordrecht railway line built between 1925 and 1927 to replace the obsolete and severely damaged railway swing bridge from 1877 over the Koningshaven designed by ir. P. Joosting, head of the Bridge Construction department at the Dutch Railways. The main structure was executed by Gute-Hoffnungshüte from Oberhausen, with the assistance of the HGB. "De Hef" acquired, partly through the eponymous film that Joris Ivens made about the Railway Bridge in 1928, a strong symbolic function for the dynamism of the Rotterdam harbour.
N.B. Upon completion of the railway tunnel in 1993 the lifting bridge lost its function as a railway bridge. On the northern lifting tower there is now a radar post for the municipal Harbour Company.
Description:
Remarkable lifting bridge consisting of three segmental arch-shaped lattice girder spans of riveted wrought iron resting on concrete piers faced with natural stone in the water and bridge abutments on either side of the Koningshaven. On the piers two tapering approximately 60m high lifting towers consisting of an open iron structure of lattice trusses and beams. Between these is the 52 m long middle segment of the bridge, the so-called span, which by means of a moveable lifting structure of wheels, cables and concrete counterweights, can be raised to a height of approximately 45 metres. In the southernmost tower there is a two-storey steel crane operator's cabin with adjacent machine room. Between the diagonal beams of the iron structure an open iron staircase has been placed on both sides, leading to the observation posts on the towers.
Assessment:
Lifting bridge dating from 1925-27 of general importance due to architectural and cultural historical value and structurally innovative value as the first example of an asymmetrical moveable lifting bridge in the Netherlands. Also of importance due to urban planning and situational value as a reminder of the aerial railway and due to the characteristic image-determining silhouette, visible over a wide area around the Koningshaven.
