Inleiding
GEDENKZUIL ter nagedachtenis van Th.J. Stieltjes, architect van de Rotterdamse Handelsvereeniging. In 1884 opgericht in de as van de Cornelis Trompstraat en het plantsoen aan het Burgermeester Hoffmanplein, naar een ontwerp van de architecten E. Gugel en E. Lacomblé in eclectische stijl.
Omschrijving
Ongeveer tien meter hoge, zich verjongende composiet zuil van rode kalksteen op een vierkante sokkel van hetzelfde materiaal. De sokkel is bewerkt: op de hoeken bevinden zich pilasters met gestileerde kapitelen en bovenin, geheel rondom, een architraaf met bloemguirlandes. Op de sokkel bevinden zich vier gedenkplaten: aan de noordzijde een cartouche met 'Thomas Johannes Stieltjes 1819-1878'; aan de zuidzijde een cartouche met 'Hulde van vrienden en vereerders 1883'; aan de westzijde een Lauwerkrans met attributen van ingenieur en krijgskundige (passer, driehoek en gevederde helm) en aan de oostzijde een bronzen medaillon met gelauwerd portret en profile. Het kapiteel van de zuil heeft bewerkte hoekvoeten en aan vier zijden een kop met een gevleugelde helm. Het kapiteel wordt bekroond door een pijnappel. De schacht is, met uitzondering van het onderste deel, gecanneleerd.

MEMORIAL COLUMN in commemoration of Th.J. Stieltjes, architect of the Rotterdam Chamber of Commerce. Erected in 1884 in the axis of the Cornelis Trompstraat and the grounds at the Burgermeester Hoffmanplein, after a design by the architects E. Gugel and E. Lacomblé in eclectic style.
Description
Approximately ten metres high, tapering composite column of red limestone on a square base of the same material. The base is worked: at the corners there are pilasters with stylised capitals and at the top, all the way around, an architrave with flower garlands. On the base there are four commemorative plaques: on the north side a cartouche with 'Thomas Johannes Stieltjes 1819-1878'; on the south side a cartouche with 'Tribute from friends and admirers 1883'; on the west side a laurel wreath with attributes of engineer and military science (compass, set square and plumed helmet) and on the east side a bronze medallion with laureated portrait in profile. The capital of the column has worked corner feet and on four sides a head with a winged helmet. The capital is crowned by a pine cone. The shaft is, with the exception of the lower section, fluted.
Valuation
Stieltjes monument dating from 1883-'84 of general importance due to its architectural and cultural-historical value, as well as important from an urban planning perspective.
