Inleiding
Voormalige SIGARENFABRIEK uit 1912 in vormen van de Art Nouveau, gebouwd voor de familie Swane.
De fabriek is markant gesitueerd op de hoek met de driehoekige Markt, met de voor- of zuidgevel aan de Willbrorduslaan.
De productie van sigaren werd gestopt in 1923.
Omschrijving
Hoogopgaand kubusvormig gebouw van drie bouwlagen onder plat dak. Hierin bevonden zich het kantoor met de directieruimten op de begane grond, de productieruimten voor sigaren op de eerste en de droogzolder voor tabak op de tweede verdieping.
De architectuur van de fabriek is monumentaal. De vier buitengevels hebben op het dak een balustrade van siermetselwerk met op de hoeken uitkragende bekroonde pilasters. Bovendien heeft de voorgevel een bekroonde top met pilasters waartussen een rondnis.
Tussen de onderpui en de bovenbouw bevindt zich een rondboogfries. De onderpui bevat terugliggende gevelvlakken met lisenen en een plint van profielstenen. Het gebouw is opgetrokken uit machinale baksteen gemetseld in kruisverband. De muuropeningen zijn alle getoogd met uitzondering van de pui op de begane grond in de voorgevel deze heeft elips- en rondbogen. De vensters op de verdieping en begane grond hebben een geometrische roedenverdeling.
Waardering
Het fabrieksgebouw is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorisch belang als voorbeeld van de sociaal-economische ontwikkeling van de nijverheid en als voorbeeld van de typologische ontwikkeling van de hoogbouw voor de sigarenindustrie. Description
Lofty cubic building of three storeys under a flat roof. It contained the office with management rooms on the ground floor, the cigar production rooms on the first floor and the tobacco drying loft on the second floor.
The architecture of the factory is monumental. The four outer facades have on the roof a balustrade of ornamental brickwork with crowned pilasters projecting at the corners. Furthermore, the front facade has a crowned top with pilasters between which is a semicircular niche.
Between the ground floor shop front and the upper structure is a round arch frieze. The shop front contains recessed facade areas with pilasters and a plinth of moulded stones. The building is constructed of machine-made brick laid in running bond. The wall openings are all arched with the exception of the shop front on the ground floor of the front facade which has elliptical and round arches. The windows on the floors and ground floor have geometric glazing bars.
Valuation
The factory building is of general interest. It has cultural-historical importance as an example of the socio-economic development of industry and as an example of the typological development of high-rise buildings for the cigar industry.
