Inleiding

Introduction

St. LUCIAKERK, built in neogothic style between 1856 and 1858 to the design of H.J. van Tulder. The church stands on the site of the old medieval church. The tower of this was rebuilt. In 1936 architect C. van Moorsel added a new sacristy and side chapels to it. In recent restorations the original polychromy and the church pews in the interior have been lost, part of the hand-formed brick has been replaced by machine-made brick.

Description

The cross-shaped basilical church with central west tower and roof turret is three-aisled and has five bays up to the transept. The choir has two bays and has a three-sided closure.

The facades are built up from hand-formed brick with lattice patterns in the gable ends at the side aisles. The gabled roofs are clad with slate in Meuse coupling; each window of the side aisles has a gabled roof that breaks through its lean-to roof. At the crossing of transept and nave an octagonal roof turret with open tracery spitzes and a tapered spire with gilded ball and cross.

The west facade has diagonally placed buttresses crowned by ashlar pinnacles. The plinth is of ashlar. On either side of the tower a climbing three-foil frieze. The tower consists of four storeys. In the buttresses blind niches and ashlar traceries and pinnacles, horizontal articulation by ashlar cornice lines.

In the first storey a portal in late-gothic style, under a segmental arch. The wing door is flanked by a moulded basement and stone jambs, ashlar shafts with pinnacle, on the arch with decorative hooks a top pinnacle. The arch filling is of ashlar four-foil tracery. In the second storey is a rose window with fish-bladder tracery. Below the cornice line a three-foil frieze.

The third storey has above a four-foil frieze a lancet frieze with three-foil.

The fourth storey contains belfry openings under a pointed arch moulding. On all four sides a steep gable flanked by double projecting spires. Above this a hexagonal spire with slate in Meuse coupling and ball, cross and weathervane.

The side and rear facades have simple brick buttresses with chamfered edges, drip moulding and water spout. Between these the pointed arch windows with drip moulding and various neogothic limestone tracery and stained glass. Above the side aisle windows natural stone relieving arches.

The tracery is built up from three lancets, alternately crowned by standing and recumbent four-foils with three-foil and fish-bladder. The transept facade is set between three times chamfered diagonally placed buttresses, ending in an octagonal pier with brick spire. The window is built up from three lancets crowned by three-foil in spherical triangle above which six-lobed rose. Between the choir and transept are side chapels. To the east of this is a lower-set choir chapel. On the north side is the sacristy of 1936. Between the heavy low buttresses are coupled pointed arch windows with wall ties. Above a balustrade is built in. The choir has wrought iron wall anchors at the height of vault and window setting. In the facade a foundation stone is placed with text: DOM Primem lapidem posuit R. Vissers pastor 6 juni MDCCCLVI.

The inner walls and vaults are plastered. Between the pointed arches that divide the space are bundled piers that lead to the moulded cross-ribbed vaults with worked keystones. In the priest's choir are stained glass windows by Jos Menke from Goch, dating 1899. The windows have as subject Peter, St. Lucia between Mary and Joseph, Paul. In the nave are grisaille windows by F. Nicolas & Sons from Roermond, 1896. The figurative elements in these date from 1950. In the church are 14 stations of the cross on canvas, painted by F.G.J. Beers from Antwerp, between 1890 and 1892.

The church furnishings further include among other things; a baptismal font from the end of the eighteenth century by Jac. Pijpers, with a cover from ca. 1935. Furthermore an oak wood altar tomb from the first half of the nineteenth century. With this; a tabernacle from ca. 1935, by Zimmerman and Van Wijnhoven. The organ from 1930. Organ and organ case are of no value from the point of view of monument conservation. Finally various holy images.

The church is partly surrounded by a low renovated brick wall provided with old ashlar pier crownings.

Valuation

The church building with sacristy is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as a special expression of a social and spiritual development, in particular the development of Catholicism in the second half of the nineteenth century and the formation of parish centres in the countryside. It is also of importance for the history of the settlement, because of the continuity of church use as expressed in the presence of the medieval tower, which is incorporated in the neogothic church. It has architectural-historical importance because of its place in the work of architect Van Tulder, as a particular example of the incorporation of motifs from Brabant village gothic with elements of southern Neogothic, which Van Tulder learned during his Belgian training. The building has ensemble values in relation to the parsonage and parish house. It has remained in good condition and is typologically rare.
