Inleiding
TRANSFORMATORHUISJE uit ca. 1925, gelegen bij de zuidelijke entree tot de historische binnenstad op geringe afstand van de gracht. Het gebouw is markant gesitueerd op de Boompjeswal die onderdeel vormt van de voormalige omwalling- en grachtstructuur. Het gebouw heeft zowel stijlelementen van de Nieuwe Haagse School als van de Amsterdamse School, zoals het vrijwel platte schilddak met groot overstek en een expressionistisch gebruik van verschillende kleuren baksteen (lichtbruin, zwart en geel). De kleuraccenten zwart en geel kwamen oorspronkelijk ook in het schilderwerk terug. Waarschijnlijk is dit en andere gelijkvormige transformatorhuisjes ontworpen door de bekende architect G. Versteeg (Architectenbureau Gratema-Versteeg).
Omschrijving
TRANSFORMATORHUISJE opgetrokken op een rechthoekige grondslag over één bouwlaag onder een ver overstekend schilddak voorzien van een bitumineuze dakafdekking. Het schilddak is vrij plat en er is geen goot aanwezig. Het overstek is uitgevoerd in hout.
De gevels zijn opgebouwd uit een hoofdlaag en een attiek die van elkaar worden gescheiden door een met gele verblendsteen omzoomde zwarte band. Ook de vier hoeken worden door een zodanig, maar dan verticaal aangebrachte afwerking gekenmerkt, met een wisselende breedte. Binnen deze verticale zwarte gedeelten op de hoeken zijn horizontale, uitkragende baksteenlinten van gele baksteen aangebracht met vier steenlagen tussenruimte. In de noordwestelijke en zuidwestelijke gevel is een deur aangebracht waarboven een in de band opgenomen ventilatierooster.
Het trasraam is uitgevoerd in zwarte baksteen en wordt aan de bovenzijde afgesloten door een strekse laag in gele verblendsteen. De attieklaag wordt beëindigd door een uitstekende rollaag van zwarte steen, terwijl de hoeken door uitstekende, dicht opeen staande, horizontale baksteenlinten van dezelfde zwarte steen worden geaccentueerd.

TRANSFORMER SUBSTATION from circa 1925, located at the southern entrance to the historic town centre at a short distance from the moat. The building is markedly situated on the Boompjeswal which forms part of the former fortification and moat structure. The building has stylistic elements of both the New Hague School and the Amsterdam School, such as the nearly flat hipped roof with large overhang and an expressionist use of different coloured brick (light brown, black and yellow). The colour accents black and yellow originally also appeared in the paintwork. This and other similar transformer substations were probably designed by the renowned architect G. Versteeg (Gratema-Versteeg Architects).
Description
TRANSFORMER SUBSTATION constructed on a rectangular ground plan over one storey under a far-overhanging hipped roof fitted with bituminous roofing. The hipped roof is relatively flat and there is no gutter present. The overhang is executed in wood.
The facades are built up from a main layer and an attic that are separated from each other by a band bordered with yellow facing brick. The four corners are also characterized by such treatment, but then applied vertically, with alternating width. Within these vertical black sections at the corners are horizontal, projecting brick bands of yellow brick with four stone courses of space between them. In the north-western and south-western facade is a door with a ventilation grate incorporated in the band above it.
The trasstone is executed in black brick and is finished at the top by a course in yellow facing brick. The attic layer is ended by a projecting roll course of black stone, while the corners are accentuated by projecting, closely spaced, horizontal brick bands of the same black stone.
